A Pharmac!!t'a Point of Viow
by John Mattox, R.Ph.
GREATER PATIENT SAFETY
Ouch! That hurts! Any
ten-year-oM could tell you
that when you step squarely
Hwn a "rock in your shoe"
you will feel a predictable
degree of pain. Naturally, in
a case like this, you would
stop and remove the painful
rock and continue more
comfortably upon your way,
and the problem would be
over.
But suppose two
medicines you are taking
caused an undesirable
interaction. If the reaction
were sudden and painful
enough for you to notice,
you'd probably stop the
dosage immediately. On the
other hand, if the reaction
were slow and unnoticeable,
you would not be compelled
to stop taking the dosage. In
this case, you could possibly
suffer severe damage from
long-term Interaction.
The point is this.
Pharmacists are becoming
increasingly alarmed at the
interactions between certain
drugs. There exists a need to
record all pharmacy
dispensed medicines.
Consequently, many of us
are turning to the
maintenance of up-to-date
family and individual
medication records to head
off the effects of drug
interactions.
In the meantime,
patients are always
encouraged to inform both
Physicians and Pharmacists
of any drugs they may have
been taking. With this
cooperation, your safety
from undesirable drug
interactions can be assured.
Editors's Note: The above article and
others to foiiow are being prepared by John
Mattox for our readers. If you have any
questions regarding these articles or
pharmacy and drugs specifically send a self
addressed. stamped envelope to Smoky
Mountain Times, Box 730, Bryson City, and we
wiii pass them on to Mr. Mattox.
