THE COURIER. GEORGE S. BAKER. ;? Editoe jlxd IoritiEToi:. All letters addressed tu Geo. Fiuxmy DECEiicra 11, H74 The voice of the Democratic nsenr aure press lias still some Jurue in it. That voice is again t Convention at this time anl under all the surround ings. The press will not intentionally injure popular inteip.sLa. Ou the con trary, it is apt i t reflect popular senti ment. The pr of North Carolina has 'upoken with etuj lia.-a.H against the Con vention movement. This fact poises m some significance. If a considerable number of prominent leaders in the CotjH -rvaUe party have advocated the call inj: of a Convention by the presant Iyiriilature, a like con eiderable number luive op used the call. The press and the members of the Leg islature and CoDgrcsa are certainly as likely to know what public sentiment on this qeastion is as any other class or classes of citizens. A majority of the whole people of North Carolina may or may not be op posed to a general change of the Con stitution. They have not yet shown that they favor a sweeping change of that instrument; bad u,s it is. For in 1871 they emphatically voted down a call for a convention to amend : this Court itution. In 1-S7i they ratified the work of two Legislatures by voting in javor oi eight amendments removing some of the most oppressive parts uf the Constitution ; showing that while they are ppjxwed to wholesale auieudment by Convention they are in favor of gradual I amendment by the Legislature. J All liistory is giv:ii to us for our in- utruetbn. If we heed its aJmonitious, well, if not, we shall male fresh history for the warning of those who will come after us. JJ tter to b? guided by the lamp of experience than by the ignis Jatuus that will load us we know not in to what peril. Wtl. Star. The Raleigh Daily iYcu's in speak ing of the present Legislature says : The poople tha State are gener- lly anxious to know at the meeting of ach General Asscmb'y how tho set ting body cemparep in point ofabi ity and nioial worth with its predecessors. w It affords us pleasure to say, and we can do bo now with propriety, that we consider the present Legislature de cidedly superior to any that has as sembled since reconstruction There are in the body (juito a number of young men who give promue of great usetulues. 31any of the-c have al- ready demonstrated their aptitude for legislation, and the others nee i only opportumties to show their Btneis m the same direction. Among the older members, arc many, well known to the people f tho Stats by their former valuable services. Taken altogether we expect good work at the hands of this body.
