Archbishop JMcCloekey acquires new I The importance of applying some

York Herald says. He is precluded by the cavil of a doubt that death has really
distance from participating in the most
important functions of the sacred col
lege. The most important of all, that of
electing a jnew Pope, although in the
course of nature it must soon devolve
on the college of cardinals, must be
performed under conditions which will
not permit Cardinal McCloskey to take
part in it. The conclave meets for this
purpose on the tenth day after the de
mise of a Pope a period so short that
an American cardinal could not be pres
ent unless he should happen to be acci
dentally in Europe at the time. The
other functions of the cardinals are
chiefly local, appertaining to the civil
and ecclesiastical administration of the
Papacy. The cardinals have always been
the princes and chief dignitaries of the
lloman States. During the long period
before the Pope was stripped of his tem
poral, power they held the highest offices
in his civil government as well as in his
ecclesiastical administration. A large
majority of the cardinals have always
bnen and still are, Italians; but their
functions have been dwarfed and nar
rowed since the assumption by King
Victor Emmanuel of civil jurisdiction in
the States of the Church. Unless the
temporal power of the Pope should be
recovered there is no longer any reason,
why so large a proportion of the car
dinals should be Italians; but it is not
probable that Ufa consideration has in
any degree influenced Pope Pius in ele
vating an American- archbishop to the
cardinalate. Besides testifying his per
sonal regard for Archbishop McCloskey
ho has merely intended to recognize the
importance of the Catholic Church in
the United States.
SUMMARY OF 5E1TS.
Spring Wrap.
The first article of spring attire to be
put on when warmer days come, , says a
fashion journal, is a wrap of lighter
quality than the heavy winter' cloak.
The first importations of these garments
are mantles, fichus, dolmans, round
capes, and sacques of drap dete, cash
mere, and Sicilienne, trimmed "with silk
braid, beaded galloon, lace, and fringe.
There aro fewer sacques than usual, and
these are of the half-fitting French shape
already noted, with long fronts and
hhort backs. Mantles take various
shapes, and are not much trimmed, be
ing merely bordered. Tne simplest
shapes have long square tabs in front
and a demi-long cape behind, outlining
the figure and draping the tournure just
as pacques do; the neck is very high, and
is always finished with a standing collar,
ruche, silk plaiting, or a lace frill.
Jet beads are still shown in the trim
mings, but not so profusely as of late ;
thus wide silk galloons are woven in
checks or blocks dotted with beads, or
else they have a tracery in Greek pattern
of finely cut beads, or perhaps rows of
beaded loops are sewed on the silk
braid. ' Another fashion is to trim with
bits of beaded fringe, each piece two or
three inches long, set diagonally near
the edge, and forming a sort of jabot
effect around the whole matter. A new
trimming is a ruche of crimped tape and
crimiod floss strung with jet', and re
sembles the moss trimming once so fash
ionable. Thread lace is also used in
profusion on fine garments, and is head
nl with crocheted passementerie.
Straight rows of braid a third of an inch
wide are arranged in clusters of three or
four, with a curled row between. Yak
and guipuro insertion and lace are still
used.
Thought For Saturday Night. ,
taken place, should be impressed upon
every one. The late historian, Prescott,
left directions to have the main artery
of his arm severed before he was buried,
solely from a dread of possible revival
in his tomb. "We are reminded of this
subject by the case which has just oc
curred in Paris, where a young and very
lovely girl if as supposed to have died of
fever, and, after the customary delay
and ceremonies, was buried at Pere la
Chaise, in a tomb owned in common
with another family. A second death
soon after caused the tomb to be opened,
when it was discovered that the girl
must have revived and come to life, as
she had turned over in her coffin, and
gave other evidences of a struggle to
free herself from her imprisonment. .
The feelings of surviving friends can
better j be imagined than described
under such circumstances, while the gen
eral public receive a warning which
should not go unheeded. It is less than'
a year since a very similar case occurred
in the city of New Orleans, where chance
discovered that a beautiful child of
twelve years, a girl of remarkable loveli
ness and promise, the idol of her parents,
was undoubtedly buried before the vital
spark had fled. Indeed the recurrence
of these cases are far more frequent than
is generally known, besides which the
very nature of the case is such that it can
only be brought to light by chance dis
covery. We therefore impress the ne
cessity of 'such precautions against
premature burial as shall render it
positively impossible to occur.' j
Such events are no new experience.
Pliny mentions the case of a young man
of high rank, who, having been dead
some time, as it was thought, was placed
upon the funeral pile in order to reduce
the body to ashes. The heat of the
flames revived him, but it was too late.
He perished before his friends could
rescue him from his awful situation.
This time he was indeed dead. We are
also informed by history that the great
anatomist, Vesalius, once had the un
speakable misfortune to commence the
dissection of a living body, apparently
dead, but which revived under the stroke
of the knife. Fatal situation ! Here
again it was too late to save life. It is
said that Vesalius was so affected by this
experience that he was unfitted for pro
fessional duty for a long period following.
Equally unhappy was the fate of Abbe
Prevost, who fell in an apopletic fit; but
he also recovered his consciousness (too
late) under the process of anatomical
dissection. So, also, in the case of J
Cardinal Somaglia, to embalm whose
body preparations had been made. At
last the surgeons, friends and operator
were gathered about the body, but the
knife had hardly penetrated into the
chest when the heart was perceived to
beat. It was a scene never to be forgot
ten by those present, whose faces
lanched with excitement. The cardinal
returned partially to his senses, and had
sufficient strength to put away the fatal
knife, but the lung was mortally
wounded!

In a paper read by Captain Shaw, of
the Metropolitan fire brigade, at the
Society of Arts, an ingenious apparatus
was described for enabling persons to
breathe in dense smoke or poisonous
vapors. It consists essentially of a close
fitting hood, with a respirator, holding a
filter, the invention of Professor Tyndall,
which consists of a valve chamber and
filter tube about four inches long screwed
on outside, with access to it from the
inside by a wooden mouthpiece. The
charge for the filter consists of the
following materials, which are put in
with the tube .turned upside down, and
the lower valve removed: Half an inch
deep of dry cotton wool, an inch deep of
the same wool saturated with glycerine,
a thin layer of dry wool, half an inch
deep of fragments of charcoal, half an

of fragments of lime, and about an inch

Catholicism.
The editor of the New York Herald,
in speaking of the appointment of Car
dinal McCloskey, says: There is no
room to doubt that "the progress of
Catholicism in the United States " has
been very remarkable. "When John
Carroll, of Maryland, was, in 1790, made
tho first Catholic bishop in America,
there were less than forty thousand peo

communion. In 1808, when six addi
tional American bishops were appointed,
tne Catholic population amounted to
only one hundred and fifty thousand
souls. In 1850 there were twenty-seven
Catholio bishops in tho United States
and a Catholic population of about one
million and a half. At presentwe fol

Catholic population of the country is
about six millions.

the reason is that they all, or nearly all,

Poor Pat. In Michigan a judge de
clined the honor of another term and
gives this as a reason why he would not
accept an office worth $1,500 a year:
"The niggardly compensation which the
people of the State insist shall pay for
the services of the judiciary has brought
the office of circuit judge into contempt,
is fast driving our best jurists from the
bench, and is filling their places with
youth and inexperience. No man who
is fit for the office will take it, and, for
one, I am tired of apologizing for an
office that ought to command a proper
respect."
Don't Hack, Hack, Cough, Cough I
Cough ia a symptom by which Tarions dis
eased conditions of the throat, bronchial tnbee
and longs manifest themselves. Bat whether
it arises from the irritation produced in the
throat and larynx by taking cold, from an at
tack of bronchitis, from incipient consumption,
or from various other causes, nothing will allay
it more speedily or cure it more permanently
than Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery.
It does not matter whether it be a recent at
tack, or a lingering cough, the Discovery is in
either aee equally well adapted for ita relief
and Dermanent cure. In fact, it will rnr a
cough in one-half the time neceeeary to cure it
with any other, medicine, and it does it, cot by
drying it up, but by removing the cause, sub
duing the irritation, and healing the affected
parts. No time should be lost in commencing
the use of a proper medicine for the relief of a
cough, for unless this course is pursued,
Berieaa and dangerous disease of the lungs ia
liable to result. Golden Medical Discovery is
sold by all dealers in medicines. Com.
