FRANKLIN COURIER, :george s. baker, . Editob and PnorniEtou. All letters addressed to V Geo. 8' Baker, Friday, December, 24, 1875. On the 1st Monday in January the Commissioners will hold their monthly .session, and we most earnestly hope they will take some steps to hater the books in the Ileiristers office corrected. The people of the County look to you gentlemen to use you utmost efforts to wipe out the foul stain that disgraces the otherwise fair escutcheon of our noble old Couuty. We come to you now in the name of the good people of our County and ask; yes. beg, that you will take some steps to wipe out this stain. We were told that at our last Jourt the whole matter would be sifted, you saw what wa done; you know that the Solicitor was here only about two days, coming after the Court had met and leaving before it adjourned. We hare yet to hear of tho first move he made towards fcrrctting out the rascali ty that has been practiced on our peo ple, his positive promises to the con trarylnotwithstenlinr. We can hope for but little from that qu rter, then it be hooves you : Jrou who should ; guard every interest of this county with a j tabus eye to use your utmost en deavors to bring the offending parties to justice, and remove this black stain from the fair name of Franklin. There is another thing we would call your attention to; it is this, last summer acommitte was appointed to examine the payments made to certain officials in the County; this committee have, made their report, and find that some of them have been paid largely in ex cess of what they wore entitled, this report has been in your possession for several months, ancl we have heard oi no positive action being taken by your body. Is this right? is this acting in good faith to tho people of the County, whose interest you have sworn to pro tect? Theso are pertinent questions, and we hope for the sake of the honor of our County, will receive due con siderations from your Honorable body. Wliy We OppoMb a Tliird' Term. - j. tn the exposures of the whiskey con spiracy the people may contemplate one of the many reasons that lead us to look upon the third term as an evil and to oppose it with all our might, If the Executive performs legitimately the duties of his offico those duties are suf ficiently onerous to filll ono ' man's ac tive hours ; but if the President fills all his time with the propagation of in trigues for another term the duties of his office must necessarily be neglected, or, what is worse, bo done for him by euperscrviccablo gentlemen at his el bow, the paid servants of the whiskey rings and othor rings. These gentle men take the labor off his hands" and perform executive duties in a way t atisfactory to those who pay them. Thoy are tho President's friends, and he trusts them and guarantees them Immunity from harm ; and with this guarantee theygo bravely forward, and the country sees the consequences. How cant President who is manoeuvring third term intrigues in thirty States Watch his supple secretaries, for whose acts he is morally responsible, or scru tinize his appointments so as to be sure that the man ho puts in a revenue of fice is not the man the whiskey thieves want' there? This is an anruraent against a second term also ; and there is no docbt that a great part of t the ser vice that a President owes to the, na tion is lost through this cause in his endeavors to secure even a second tei m. But in the effort for a third term it is all the worse, simply because this is an effort so outside of our republican tra ', ditions tnat it is something like tempt ing men to treason. All, their .'stan dards have to bo upset. Their sense of right and wrong niust be confused.. Hence it must be an absorbing," ardu. ous, earnest labor; and the .man who once engages in it has ao thought for any Bubject, except as it relates to this If justice is to be done it must be done lightly, lest a friend should bo lost ; or in order that ' vn any enemy may be brought over. If an appointment is to be made the inriuiiy is not whether the man is honest, but whether he favors the third term. If from a thousand pointa at once the President is warned that the peoDle about him ar abusing v; i , . . . his poufidence, they have only to whis per in his car that all the warnings are a conspiracy against - the third term. And go it goes, and so it results that this ambition cripples, destroys or cor rupts the " public service. zetc ) ork Herald,' ' i"i ' Mm mm a ' - ' . The disgraceful fact is new appear- mg in evidence that all the documents bearing against the private secretary of the President rhave been purloined ! Who stole them?: Was it that 'Sylph's woman who wrote the" "Bab" tele grams. 1 As long ago as 869 President Grant received official information of, the moral and intellectual unfitness of Mc Donald to be a collector of the revenue. And yet the President appointed him. Behold the result! Wash. News. OUH PROSPECTUS ITOK 1876. "Saturday Night" : Tie Best and Brightest of tie eei lies !
