STREET MATTERS.
. Many of our. people would, be
glad to have the name of Road
street changed, more.: especially
those who live on this, one of our
principal avenues. The name is
most appropriate, is it not? At
the timethe street was named,
there was probably some doubt
as to whether it was a street or a
road, ""and the lot fell on jonah."
Now however the street is ' there,
but so also; are numerous fine , resi
dences, and more .in building.
Kven the addition oi the letter e,
making it Eoade street, vrould be
more like, but we are in favor of
an entirelY new name. What's the
matter with 'Underwood- street.
Our reasons for naming it thus are
found in the editorial columns. "We
are also heartily in favor of the
putting through of a number
of new : streets, for instance,
Dyer to Ehringhaus, Burgess to
Harney. Pool to Bureress and
others.
The time to attend to these mat
ters is now, before the growth of
the town will close up the open
ings and forever ; prevent these
streets being opened. Another
thing. If :. Elizabeth City ever
amounts to anything, and we all
have our opinion in the matter, it
will be seriously regretted that
such streets as Matthews, Pearl
and Lawrence were not made
wider before the rapid growth of
the city ; began. Sleep on these
things.

PUBLIC INGRATITUDE.
While walking through the
cemetery a iew aays since, we
were struck forcibly with the un
kempt appearance of the resting
place of our of dead. Stones have
fallen and brush grows over and
among them. It was that we had
to push away the briers from the
grave of . him who perhaps has
been the most potent factor in our
prosperity. We are speaking now
of Mr. W. G. Underwood, a north
ern man who came to thja city many
years ag. with ther northern spirit
of thrift, and labored. He was
1. 1. .
tuc : juuumger oi progress
and enlightenment in Elizabeth
City. Probably he had more to do
with the Luilding of the railroad
than any one man, and his record
as one devoted to the best inter
est of,the city has no successor.' He
has gone to his just re ward as men
do. His memory is passing, as wil
pass me memory of the greatest
among u, and get no monumen
marks his last resting place. Per-
1 Y -
naps ne is receiving from other
hands than ours, full recompence
for all his good deeds while among
us. Be that as it may, we should
show by some public expression
that we appreciate his work and
are grateful, to his memory. Per
haps the christening of one of our
most beautiful avenues in his
memory, as suggested in the same
column would be the best express
ion of such gratitude.
