A building and loan association, to be known as the High Point ' Perpetual Building and Loan As , sociation, was organized at High Point recently, with six or seven - "hundred shares. Elizabeth City needs a Building & Loan Associa tion. There is great need of more , good residences to rent. We -v know of many people who have '.been seeking desirable residences to ' rent and are' unable to find them. .. ' ' The people like to be sold and -j cannot live unless they are cheated. .The latest comes from Kichmond, , Va.; which town was. done to a turn by the wily Professor Lee. He professed to . knowing all about the past, present and future of people, and by his advertising did a wholesale business; in the ' Virginia caital. So wonderful was his power that ladies left their diamond rings. with him to have magnetized i and : converted . into ' tallismen. ' But the "Professor" got ; sick and suddenly disappeared and ; before leaving forgot, to settle with ! his - employees and return a fine diamond ringO Now the police are on the hunt for the gentleman. Wednesday the birthday of Abraham Lincoln and is observed by some ceremony in the Northern and Western States. The memory of this man is linked forever with the history of this country. His homely wit and lucid humor have made him the object of a kindly feeling evn by those who were robbed by he policy for which he stood in 1860. There is something inspiring in the life and services of a plain poor boy, with no ad vantages or pull, who is able by hard work to raise himself to the highest place in the gift of the American people. CoL Henry Wat- terson has said that he found in speaking on platforms that the mention of Lincoln's name was greeted .with louder applause in. the South than in the the North. That statement speaksvolumes for the South and for Abraham Lincoln. The fact that Lincoln is honored in the South is no indi cation of waning loyalty of South erners to their country's history. The heroic conduct of our fathers will forever; be the prou dest iheritage of the Southland. The South never hated the Union, the violation of a principle forced the South to attempt to form ano ther Union which would hold the same doctrine that the New En gland States stood for in the early part of the century. The day ; is now at hand when all the eyes of the North and South are straining towards the future. With' such a united ountry the heroism of the North and South will become the common glory of all Some may be skeptical on this point, but they can find examples in the world's history still more remark able. In the last decade of the seventeenth century, the Scottish Highlanders once more drew their sword against the King of England. A bitter struggle followed. To day the English world applauds the victory of Killiecrankie. The English massacre of the people of Glencoe is abhorred by all now. So the day must be at hand in our country when the name of Robert E. Lee is ranked among the great est men the -nation has; produced and Stonewall Jackson is admired in every State. So when the South looks , with streaming ' eyes upon the bust of Lee in- a Northern State she may well cast r a wreath upon the grave of the plain, .hon est, kindly Lincoln. t NOTIGC!
