In reference to the breaking of
jail by prisoners the 12th and 14th
inst before the escape of the first
presoner on the 12th - inst. The
combination locks were kent on
all the time as was no occaion to
open it except in the case of put
ting rprioners in or taking them
out '
" After, the breaking of jail on
12th inst, ;I had to confine the
remaining prisoners in their cells ,
and by so doing it was necessary
to unlock the combination every
morning so' that the jailer ; could
enter the cells and clear them.
He being instucted to put com
bination-locks on every night.
- On the night of the I4th the
iauer iauea to turn the com
bination on I suppose, as " it was
found unlocked next morning, and
the locks on each of the cells were
unlocked also. The locks- on the
cells could not have been unlock

from the outside. Some one must
have secreted - themselves on the
inside with a key and turned the
prisoners out There was no
negligence on any part as alleged
by the "Economist" where he gets
his information from I can not telL
He seems to have drawn largely
on his immagination to' injure me
as there are many things he stated
that are not true. I took Mr.
Smith through the jail and ex
plained the situation about the
combinations I had no idea that.
the Economist would intentionally
do me an injustice hope they will
make the proper correction.
