1 1 S THE TARJCEEL, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER?, 1902. OLD TRAP. Correspondence of the -Tar Heel. Old Trap K aNov. 5 - ; ' The : cotton picking . is ; almost over now. V Mr. Doxey of CoiDjock, who is in our midst for a few . days has re turned home. He says that a great many are ' making preparation for ducking this winter. ' r ;. Messrs. J. W. Kight and A. B. Needham of New York received a hearty welcome in our 'midst by I ' their freinds and relatives. They have gone over to the Alligator" on a bear hunt, but will return in a few days. Mr. E. G. Harrison came very near getting killed last week by a four year old colt. He had just finished gearing her to a farm cart and was fastening the girt when she gave a lunge. . He caught her by the bridle and tried to stop her but could not; and in going through the gate he was thrown against the post and his left arm broken be tween the elbow and shoulder. Dr. If earing was called immediate ly and under his treatment Mr. Harrison is getting along nicely. SOUTH MILLS. South Mills, N. C, Nov. 41 Correspondence of the Tar Heel. The 4th quarterly' meeting of Camden Circuit, was held last Tues day Oct. . 30, at Mt Brides I. E. Church South Rev. J. E. TJunder- derwood, P. E. presiding. The C. C. Rev. W. E. Hocntt, should feel- greatly uncouraged and proud as this report was one of the best in tha entire district,,as expressed by Rev. Underwood, Rev. Hocutt is a zealous and earnest worker for Christ and is greatly beloved by all his people, they just will not hear to anything except his return to Camden charge for another year. The people of South Mills and vicinity are just now discussing the probability of the Inland "Waterway from Beaufort Inlet, N. C, to' Tidewater, Va., utilizing the Dismal Swamp Canal as one of the links in this great enterprise. Sunday ago I noticed a supposed Teport by the Suffolk Correspondent of Virginian-Pilot of some expert Engineers as to the dangerous diseases lurking in the confines of the great Dismal Swamp, should the water from Lake Drummond used by Canal Co., as a reserve water supply in case of exceeding dry weather, and the probability of the Lake being drained dry should the Canal be widened and deepened of. Then people -representing a combined Lum ber dealers, who now have a suit pending in the courts of Va. against the : Lake Drummond Canal & Water Co., for lowering . the water in the Canal and by this means drain the swamp, killing, their lumber. I can say without contra'diction tthat the people as a rule are as Til 1 ' -1 lit meaiiny nere unqer tne veryj 'sTiado w of the great Dismal Swamp :a s at any place I know off. I .am sorry , the draining of Lake Drummond,, and ,;. the lerking disease , of the Dismal Swamp rare ;just mow ' troubling the minds of scientists'.1 It seems they ' have just awokeneol; to these neW dangers anjdinicjilties since the talking ojfii the proposed .Inland Waterway' a oirespogncothe Tar: HeeL PoysHai NiC., Nov.' 3.
