The white school teachers of the county will hold an educationa. conference at the Atlantic Collegi ate Institute, in 'this city, to-mor row. v Interesting papers upon the subject of education will be read. The teachers wTTl exchange their views upon the subject of teaching and interesting discussions of new and improved methods of instruc tion will consume much of the time. -. Mr. D. . W. Morgan, of Mount Herman townsip" has been ap pointed a member of the' board of Education; to fip the vacancy 'oc casioned :by -tHe resignation of Sheriff Eeid. f " , Prof. S. L. Sheep county . super intendent of public instruction has recently spent much of his time in visiting the schpols ofthe comity, fie reports the attendance in eouraging, especially among the white schools. ( He says that the white people are more awake to the necessity of an education than ever before. i - The school lat 'Sound Neck ' is without a teacher and the vacancy cannot be supplied This reminds us that there is a scarcity of teach ers not only j4 this county, but in the district" tSupt.' Sheep has a number, of applications for' teach ers, from, other , counties. ' It be hooves'the legislature xto establish a normal school, 7 in this section, for the professional preparation of teachers. Thfe colored schools are better off tha4 the white schools iri'this respect, v There are colored normal schools in practically every section .of the state while the one white normal schpol is situated :a. Greensboro, j - . . The school; census for 1903 is be ' but little increase over V last year. Yl In attendance "and i enroll-s ment; a noticable; increase is ex pected" Lasf4 years ' census gave Pasquotank eounty AilQ chrildren. now being ; compiled j In , number of children of school age these Vill between the ages of six and twenty one. ut tniB number zzoz, or a ittle over half were : whites. J The. roads are . in; good condition now so far as predictions are con- concerned and no child is farther than -two ! miles : distant -l from a schooL 1 . j -' -' . , s When asked about the probable Consolidation of mall . school, dis tricts; Prof. Sheep that sooner or later it would occur. The ne cessity, of this ; is apparent ; when we cite an instance right here in this coAnty. . Take Nixonton town ship! . It has, three schools with a CUIUUUU3U ttiteuuaiiuo ui xxut ixiuo than thirty five pupils. , One of these ,schpola reports an attendance of only!, 8, to ,10, pupils. By; con solidating these three districts the one school would have a total . ap propriation of $450.00 or the , com bined appropriations of the three districts. This sum would be 1 suf ficient to conduct a 9 months school say nothing of providing additional 'comforts, 'And then the consoli dation of these three ; districts would remove no pupil mdre ' than two and a half - miles from the schooL . : . ' , . . A New Route Suggested. - " Our Fairfield correspondent says that the Inland Water 'Way pro ject is receiving no" little discus sion in HyaVcounty. i The people over there are suggesting a route that is not only a yery feasible one but one which has pnany points superior to others now under con siderafion. The route suggested by these people is to continue the waterway from the mouth of Pas quotank river to Alligator river; from . the head ot the Alligator through' the low lands of Hyde to lake Mattamuskeet from thence through the lowlands' of the sou thern part of Hyde into the Pam lico fipjand. This route is but little longer than others unde con sideration ' and aside - from other advantages; the Inland -Waterway if carried' through there would develop the countries ? of Tyrrell, Dare and Hyde whereas these coun ties would otherwise profit but lit tie by the acquisition of the water way.. Another argument advanced is that should the inland waterway ever have to be used as a plaee of Tef uge for our ships in time of war its being the farther inland would prove : invaluable. On the other hand, should the waterway go through Croatan sound our fleets could b easily bombarded from the" Atlantic. - - ' This newly proposed TOute is a,n iateresting one,' as a glance at your map will telL n '' Farm Notes. .
