Cours es in Agriculture and Horti culture; in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical) Engineer ing; in Cotton fylilling and Dyeing; in industrial Chemistry, Why not fit yourself for life by taking one of these courses? -Address D. H. HILL President, West Raleigh, N. C. MISS HARRELL NEARLY DROWNS Columbia, June 8 1909. Last week Mrs. James Harrell, Mrs. Bush Har rell, Miss Florida Harrell and Mr Forrest Liverman wentxfor a fishing trip on the Scuppernong river which came near ending fatally. In thi af ternoon, while the party were en joying the sport a sudden thunder I storm aDDeared in the West. Mr Liverman who is an expert oarsman noting the rapi advance of the storm proceeded to row the party to Shelter and In the excitement of the mo ment the boat came in contact with an unobserved pile and as a result of the collision Miss Florida Harrell who was seated in the extreme bow of the boat was hurled headlong In to the water. Mr. Liverman recog nizing the perilous position of the young lady plunged overboard and a-f ter diving in 15 feet of water sue ceeded in bringing her to the surface, The other occupants of the boat b came so excited as to be unable to render any assistance and it was with the greatest difficulty that he was able to keep the struggling gir and himself above water. Mr. Ed Little john and some companions who hap pened to be rowing in the vicinity saw the accident and rushed to the rescue and succeeded in placing the half drowned lady in the boat. Miss Harrell's escape from a watery grave was indeed narrow and should be a warning to those especially who can not swim, to be more careful in handling boats in deep water. The Board of Town Aldermen held its first meeting since the election Monday evening in the Court House, a full Bard being present with the exception of Alderman Davenport, who has been absent. The Board elected S. M. Combs clerk and Rob ert Knight City Treasurer and placed a license tax of $1.00 upon boot blacks. In the election of a town con stable in the place of Robert Dillen resigned. The board after several bal lots showed a deadlock, feid the mat ter over until the next meeting. Sev eral bills were audited and much routine business transacted. Dr. Spruill of the board of health appeared before the board and gave a detailed report of the sanitary con dition of the city. He said that he had made a careful investigation in which he had found the conditions in most respects very satisfactory, yet there remained much to be done, most important of which was the drainage in some of the streets of the town. We can, said the doctor neglect for a time at least the ques tion of electric lights, paved streets or other public utilities, but we can not and must not neglect the health of our citizens. Withl the warm weath er upon us the danger of an epidemic becomes more and more evident and we must take every precaution to prevent the posibility of such a ca lamuty. The question was laid over until the next meeting when proper action will be taken in the matter. ' The board adjourned until next Monday evening June 14 .
