yesterday. He was exceedingly thirs

thirst was great too. He visited one
near beer joint but this failed to. sat
isfy the cravings of the thirst. He
visited another and partook of the
same beverage. His thirst was slak
ed! and at the same time hiB brains
got slack too. it was not long before
be got mixed up with John Jones of
Camden who was peacefully minding
his own business. After a Jittle devil
ing of Jones by Whiteman, Jones get
tired of it and gave WbTteman a
thrasMsg. Consequently this got both
of them m trouble, and in trying to
explain the matters to Jute Sawrer
Friday morning the evidence leaked
out and George Brmsen, the man at

Thomas J. Markham, the subject of
this sketch was born in Elizabeth City
on the 8th day of November, 1882 land
born, too of as good parentage as any
body is born of. As a child he played
on the streets of Elizabeth City and
grew up under the observaflon' of the
people of his cfty.All of his acts have
done right here in Elizabeth City and
no person can say that they hare ever
known Tom Markham to be suiltv of
anything mean.
In his boyhood he attended Prof.
Tillett's school and was trained under
the,' tutorage of this brilliant scholar
and distinguished gentlemaa. Aleng
with the superior learning of this
man was imparted many of the prin
ciples with distinguished the Ife of
this man asxd which now live in his
pupil
He spent his boyhood here and im
pressed all With his manly straight
forward character for which the peo
ple respected and trusted him. When
he r-cached maturity, he enteredWake
Forest College, and there he conduct
ed himself in the same upright and
correct manner which insirired the

his work well! was painstaking and
