The description of the burning of an excurion boat off North Brothers Island, and the inevit. able fate of the excursionists who ta'rted out with hearts beating high with exoitement and antici pated pleasure, is appalling. Over five hundred lost their lives, the larger part of whom were children. Worda are powerless to exprvss the sympathy felt. The fsot that Dr. Edwin A. Oreat souls can neither lie starved by joverty nor cbokwl by riohes. COMPi.KTI-: ASSORTMhNT HI- NOTIONS. Whatever For the first time in fourteen years General John B. Gordon failed to preside at the annual gathering of the confederate veter ans. His death, which occurred since the last reunion, was and is sincerely mourned and his pres ence was much missed at the re union. The few remaining mem bers of the North Carolina drum corps comprise the only surviving drum corps0 of the Confederate hosts and enthusiastic applause greeted their appearance ia the great hall at Nahulle. There has been a large reduction in the acreage of tobacco this year. While the old bright belt of North Carelina reports tbe acreage prac tically tbe same as last year the new belt in the eastern part of North Carolina presents a marked contrast. Reports indicate a mark ed reduction in acreage : estimates varying from 2) to 60 per cent, lees than was planted in these counties last year. The weather conditions have been unfavorable for this crop, and the p ants are small and very scarce in many sections. The crop report issued by the depart ment of egriulture says: "The low price received for the crop last year, and the present high price of cotton and tbe scarcity of labor have caused the decrease?" 1 The rumblings of the Russian- Japaq war whioh have been so faint and distant as to almost con vince many that no war was wag ing at all, is now being heard with distinctness. Id an editorial the Raleigh Post says: Horrible story. Reminder of Sherman's definition of war. A dispatch in giving tbe report of the military cominssions signed to bury the Russian dead after tbe Nanshan Hill battle, ooollv says: "It was found that ten Russian officers and 664 men who fell in the battle had been carefully buried and 80 men were buried by tbe outposts, making the total nubmerof killed left behind by tbe Russians 704. " That short story contains tragedy and woe sufficient to startle and shock a universe, and yet we read it and hurry on without so much as the twitch of a muscle, and actually look with some eagerness for a story giving the details of a great er slaughter. If one or two men are shot here at borne there is at once a great commotion. But one is war and the other may be merely a fight or. a riot. What's the difference when the shedding of blood and the sacrifice of human lives is the price demanded? The farmer need we make a ape- dalty of handling.
