ROBESOMAN r j Country. God nnd Truth. ESTABLISHED 1S7G SINGLE CO' .3 6 CENTS LUMBERTON, NORTH CAROLINA FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7. 1004 VOL. XXXV. NO. 00. WHOLE NO. 10T12 tDITUUlAL "It ina tbtth carrying of Iv ouf-atiou of money" aava the Charlotte Chron iole, and t h truthfulneaa of t e atatement is borne out by aat exrle- ev Tha Wnhirgton 1'oat also remark! that "the State i notorious among party manager for the amount of money a auc oeanful atruggle r quirva." That such condition is true is a fearful commentary on political condi tion in general and en-ecially on thoae which obtain in the State of Indiana. Of course in everjt State iterhajw, can be found a purchasable element and this will continue so long as men who can Tote are ao ignorant as to have incorrect notions of honor and honesty. It is rather too hopeful) of a Tiew to take of the oase to think that we shall ever see the time when politics will be con ducted on the same principles as are other businesses, but unless we are surprised, the tendency of the time is towards a dimu nition of political corruption and a more healthtul tone is noticeable. Judtf I'ark-r iu a rcii "cr showed thai lh -ipudUor-- of th gornuiu o'd"r Jaitrrai ir Oxnm-u W. J tunic c!lt lh l rVfauy i f our yooux ixKpU at' The Raleigh News and Observer says of Dr. MoKelway, who has recently resigned aa editor of the Charlotte News, to accept a po sition 89 one of the secretaries of the National Child Labor Com mittee: "It is tco not much to say that no daily pner in North Carolina hue been edited with such brilliancy and ability as the Charlotte News under the editorship of Dr. Mo Kelway. He is well equipped, honest. courageous and sincere, and alwRvs rincs clear. He will be greatly missed from daily jour nalism.'' The retirement of the Doctor from the editorship of the News by no means means th t his jour nalistic labors have ceased and that we shall see no more from bis faoile pen. Work of this charac ter is with him a matter of in stinct and is as easy to him as it is enjoyable to his host of readers throughout the State. It has been said of him by a competent au thority and one who was not ex pected to feel especially kindly toward him, that he was the best editorial writer in the South. Per haps neither this nor the above contributed from the News and Observer overstate the matter much.
