President Jordan was givn au ovation wD6u he ascend -d tru platform. The invocation was o - fered by Rev. Dr. Beverly Warner Ex-President Jhu M. Parker, ol the New Orleans Cotton f xchance, delivered an address of welcome, in which be said the speculator i the greatest euecuy the farmer has. He counselled the farmer to not "kill" the golden goose by putting up prices so high as we will soon have a close competition from other countries. At the opening of the afternoon session if the Southern Cotton convention, announcements were made of members from the various states to serve on the committees which do the actual work of tha convention. Thb committees pro vided for are on acreage and di versification, pushiug the work of organization, and financing the association, warehousing, holding balance of unsold crop, trade re lations and statistics. An address by Hon. H. S. Scott, of Mississippi; on work in cotton fields provoked considerable dis cussion. Mr. Scott said the con elusion could not be avoided'that the negro laborer in the South had finally become a general woe ful failure. D. A. Tompkins, of Charlotte, N. C, was introduced to speak on "Cotton Values in Textile Fabrics." He advocated the sale of cotton goods to Cnma instead of the raw cottou to En gland, and especially .emphasized the need of development of i knowledge and ekiil in manu facture that would lead tu the production of better goods than Onenaburg and Btandard sheetiugs so that in time cotton would be come in a degree a basis for the sale of knowledge aud , skill neces sary to the prodbction of the finer fabrics. At the conclusion ofMr. Tomp. kins' address Mr. Brown, of North Carolina, introduced a resolution endorsing the cotton commission bill of Senator Overman. The convex lion men aajournea until night."
