In tbelonglist ot pears collect ed from all parts of the country and from Europe during the nine teenth century-Tnone excel the Seckel in quality and hardly any come, up to it. It is an American variety, whichoriginated acci dentoilylnear Philadelphia. It has been known for nearly or quite 150 years. Without being a rampant grow er, the tree maybe said tobe fairly vigorous, and as for hardiness there is none which excels it, and no other pear tree is so free from blight It was'sent to London Horticul tural Society early in the past century byCWilliam Coxe, the author of the first extended American work on fruits, and as an appreciation of its excellence it is understood that he was elected to membership in the renowned society, the first of his country men who enjoyed the distinction The original tree was living a few years ago, a nice engraving of it being bound up in one of the annual reports of the Penn sylvania State Board of Agricul ture. Though it cannot be called tar dy, it does not begin to bear fruit as early as some, but it is very good and regular bearer. It has two drawbacks, however. The color is a dull brownish green, becoming brighter in the sun; not attractive in the open market, only to the knowing ones, andfthe size is rather small. The first is by no means seri ous, and the second can be reme died in good measure. The small size is partly the result of its habit of bearing in clusters of two or three. Thinning each of these clusters to one early in the season not only improves the size but also removes the danger of injury by certain insects, so com mon where fruits are borne in clusters. One peculiarity of the Seckel was brought to notice by Ga briel Sleath, one the early mem bers of the Cincinnatti Horticul tural Society it grows well on the apple. It is best, however, to graft it on the extreme top of the tree, allowing the lower apple branches to remain, but keeping them in check. Pe rsons who find enjoyment in grafting will be in terested in trying this in spring. National Farmer. sa State of Ohio, City of Toledo, ( Lucas Ooanty. T., a prosperous merchant, will have his name preserved in the pages of history as the only person who has ever declined to meet the President of the United States when it was the easy and natural thing to do. Mr. Bodawitz went to Washington to file charges against an applicant for a Federal job. He succeeded in knocking out his man while calling at the White House Secretary Loeb ask ed him if he would not like to see the President. Mr. Bodawitz look ed at his watch and replied: "It is now 12 o'clock and I have an ap pointment over at the Arlington in three, minutes." "Couldn't you drop around inthe morning?" asked Secretary Loeb, when he caught his breath. "No." re plied Mr. Bodwitz, "I am going down Mount Vernon in the morn ing and will take JJ'clock train for the West." Mr. Bodwitz simply did not have any curiosty to see the Pres ident and no reason to believe that the President wanted to see him. Philadelphia Record. ' Speaking of peculiar names for animals," said a traveling man in the Louisville Courier Journal, 'l know a man who owns no few er than 25 teams in connection with a large farm in the Blue Grass section, and he has 50 horses. He tries to name them all after prominent characters in the Bible. Several were mares, and with a second crop of colts he found himself in dire straits. "He was not a church goer in fact, I dont suppose he ever saw the inside of a church and his knowledge of Biblical names were a trtse limited. With his'second crop of colts.he turned to Shakes peare for his names. Finally he sold several horses, but he still retains his 25 teams, and the neighbors have great sport over thecurious combination of names. Ed,' I heard him saying U his hired man one mornine.
