Dear Sir: I used 50 bags of your Gu

I got better results from it than any Gu

place this year I have had in 20 y ears
My neighbors readily tell me this end asks
life why it is, and I tell thetn I cant see
any other reason only I find I used the
test Guano I ever used before, so I advise
everybody that want to make a good crop

-' The Seckel Pear.
In tbelonglist ot pears collect
ed from all parts of the country
and from Europe during the nine
teenth century-Tnone excel the
Seckel in quality and hardly any
come, up to it. It is an American
variety, whichoriginated acci
dentoilylnear Philadelphia. It
has been known for nearly or
quite 150 years.
Without being a rampant grow
er, the tree maybe said tobe fairly
vigorous, and as for hardiness
there is none which excels it, and
no other pear tree is so free from
blight
It was'sent to London Horticul
tural Society early in the past
century byCWilliam Coxe, the
author of the first extended
American work on fruits, and as
an appreciation of its excellence it
is understood that he was elected
to membership in the renowned
society, the first of his country
men who enjoyed the distinction
The original tree was living a
few years ago, a nice engraving
of it being bound up in one of
the annual reports of the Penn
sylvania State Board of Agricul
ture. Though it cannot be called tar
dy, it does not begin to bear fruit
as early as some, but it is very
good and regular bearer. It has
two drawbacks, however. The
color is a dull brownish green,
becoming brighter in the sun;
not attractive in the open market,
only to the knowing ones, andfthe
size is rather small.
The first is by no means seri
ous, and the second can be reme
died in good measure. The
small size is partly the result of
its habit of bearing in clusters of
two or three. Thinning each of
these clusters to one early in the
season not only improves the size
but also removes the danger of
injury by certain insects, so com
mon where fruits are borne in
clusters.
One peculiarity of the Seckel
was brought to notice by Ga
briel Sleath, one the early mem
bers of the Cincinnatti Horticul
tural Society it grows well on
the apple. It is best, however, to
graft it on the extreme top of the
tree, allowing the lower apple
branches to remain, but keeping
them in check. Pe rsons who find
enjoyment in grafting will be in
terested in trying this in spring.

An Easy Way.
The Rev. Dr. Adams of Maine
is noted for his sententiousness
both in and out of the pulpit. As
he was coming down a Boston
street one day a man asked him,
Sir, can you tell me how to find
the sheriff's office V" Yes, sir, "
was the reply." "Every time you
earn $5 spend $$0. " Saying (this,
the doctor walked on, leaving his
questioner gaping upon the side

For an Impaired Appetite.
Loss of appetite always results from
faulty digestion. All that is needed is
a few doses of Chamberlain's Stomach

like a waif. These Tablets also act
as a gentle laxative. For sale by Dr.

Mr. Bodawitz, of Admore, I. T.,
a prosperous merchant, will have
his name preserved in the pages
of history as the only person who
has ever declined to meet the
President of the United States
when it was the easy and natural
thing to do. Mr. Bodawitz went
to Washington to file charges
against an applicant for a Federal
job. He succeeded in knocking
out his man while calling at the
White House Secretary Loeb ask
ed him if he would not like to see
the President. Mr. Bodawitz look
ed at his watch and replied: "It
is now 12 o'clock and I have an ap
pointment over at the Arlington
in three, minutes." "Couldn't
you drop around inthe morning?"
asked Secretary Loeb, when he
caught his breath. "No." re
plied Mr. Bodwitz, "I am going
down Mount Vernon in the morn
ing and will take JJ'clock train for
the West."
Mr. Bodwitz simply did not
have any curiosty to see the Pres
ident and no reason to believe
that the President wanted to see
him. Philadelphia Record.
A Chicago Aldeiman Owes Election to
to Ckamberlain's Cough Remedy.
"I can heartily and conscientiously
recommend Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy for affections of the throat
and lungs, " says Hon. John Shenick
230 So. Peoria St., Chicago. "Two
years ago during a political campaign,
1 caught cold after being overheated,
which irritated my throat and I was
finally compelled to stop, as I could
not speak aloud. In my extremity a
friend advised me to use Chamber
lain's Cough Remedy. I took two
doses that afternoon and oould not
believe my senses when I found the
next morning the inflammation had
largely subsided I took several
doses that day, kept right on talking
through the campaign, and I thank
this medicine that I won my seat in
the Council." This remedy is for

Disraeli's Thrust.
The giving to the English pre
mier of social precedence over
the nobility is a recognition of
the prime minister's power.
Apropos of this, Disraeli, after a
banquet at which a number of
titled persons preceded the pre
mier from the dining room, took
the arm of his neighbor and.point
ing to the backs of retreating
dukes and marquises, said pithi
ly, "Next week I shall be making
some of those. ' '

Bible Names for Nags.
' Speaking of peculiar names
for animals," said a traveling man
in the Louisville Courier Journal,
'l know a man who owns no few
er than 25 teams in connection
with a large farm in the Blue
Grass section, and he has 50
horses. He tries to name them
all after prominent characters in
the Bible. Several were mares,
and with a second crop of colts
he found himself in dire straits.
"He was not a church goer in
fact, I dont suppose he ever saw
the inside of a church and his
knowledge of Biblical names were
a trtse limited. With his'second
crop of colts.he turned to Shakes
peare for his names. Finally he
sold several horses, but he still
retains his 25 teams, and the
neighbors have great sport over
thecurious combination of names.
Ed,' I heard him saying U
his hired man one mornine. I
wish you would hitch up Moses
with King Lear, and lead Nebu
chadnezzar down for a new pair
if shoes. Comintr bach, take Fal-
staff out in the lower pasture; he
is getting pretty thin. And be
fore you go you might give King
Solomon a feed. ' At time he has
Hamlet plodding along dusty
roads beside Adam. Eve is often
harnessed with Henry VIII. His
neighbors have never been able
to learn how to keeps all the
names straight, but he evidently
succeeds. "
The best way to rid the system of a
cold is to evacuate the bowels. Ken

as a pleasant, yet effectual cathartic
on the bowels. It clears the head,
cuts bronchial tubes, relieves coughs,
colds, croup, whooping cough, etc.
