McLean Endorsed forjudge Adams for State Chairman - Deleaates Named. The Republican of Robeson held their county convention in the court house here Saturday n.ftomnnn to name delegates to ' the State, congressional and iudicial conventions. Nine of the nineteen townships of the county were represented by delegates who responded to the roll call The convention was first called to order at noon by Chairman W. J. Currie, of Maxton, but was soon adjourned to meet again at 2 o'clock. However, a magis trate court was in session and delayed the meeting until 3:30 o'clock, when the business of the convention was entered into pro perly. After stating the object of the convention, Dr. R. M. Norment moved that a committee be ap pointed to retire to the committee room and name delegates to the different unanimously, was as follows: State Convention W. H. Kin- law, R. M. Norment, N. P. Mc Neill, W. J. Currie, Angus Shaw, Alex. Parham, J. W. Hall, J. M. Burke and A- B. Mercer. Judicial W. K. Culbreth, W. A. Wilkes, E. G. Johnson, Alfred Lawson, B. F. McLean, John G. Brown, J. C. Snoddy, Neill Mc Rae and S. A. Edmund. It was further decided that any of the above who could do so attend the congressional conven tion as delegates. The State and judicial conventions meet at the I same time July 10 at G reens boro- A motion by Dr. Norment, and adopted unanimously by the c6n vention. endorsed the able and brilliant admin stration of Theo dore Roosevelt and the State Republican organization. Dele crates were instructed to vote m the conventions forjudge Adams, of Greensboro, for chairmrn of the State Republican executive committee, and Mr. B. P. Mc Lean, of Maxton. for judge of this, the Seventh judicial dis trict. A motion was made to elect a permanent organization for the county but the motion lost, the majority favoring apostponement untill the next mass meeting. Dr. Norment arose to say that Marion Butler was the biggest man in the State. He had ac complished much for the Rep ublican party giving it a Gover nor for four years and United States Senator for eight years. Chairman Currie had a few re marks, reminiscently , of the progress the party had made in this section. Dr. Norment said he thought the thing to do is to have candi dates for every office and fight the Democrats to win. The Sate Bar Association which convened at Wrightsville Beach Wednesday evening adjourned Friday afternoon, probably to meet next time at Toxaway. Memorials were held for the deceased members. The com mittee on legislation and law pre sented a resolution, which was carried, to have the Legislature pass a statute that all. the public printing be assigned to any shop which can do it best and quickest. regardless of the so-called public printer. This resolution was based upon a suggestion fro: Mr. Macy L.John,of Laurinburg, who submitted it by mail. Mr. George Rountree was nom inated by ex-Governor Aycock for president and was elected by acclamation. Mr. T. W. Da is, also of the local bar, was elected secretary over Mr. D. B. Smith, of Charlotte, by but a small dozen or so. His position makes him ex-omcio treasurer. The ne.w members received were, in all, 40. Judge T. B. Womack and Mr Victor S. Bryant were added to executive committee and there were sixteen vice presidents elected, whom it is entirely too hot to name. With all the voluminous matter printed about the recent change in the Southern Railway schedule to which the . Raleigh News and Observer objected, just these facts stand out unshaken: A railroad ought never to be allow ed to change its schedule for the purpose of injuring any news paper; a paper should never be allowed to bulldoze authorities in to forcing a change of schedule solely for its convenience. We confess that,owing to the brevity of human life, we have not read the testimony, and we do not know which of . these principles applies in the case recently be fore the public. What we do know is, that the Corporation Commission ought to have power to protect the people by enforc ing any decree not in conflict with the Constitution. Gonvpoadenc of th Rolwaonlan The death of Mr. Norman Barnes, a former resident of this place, is heard of with sadness and sincere regret by his many friends in this community. He was found dead about 10 o'clock Thursday morning on the rail road track near Sumter. S. C. where he was making his home It is supposed he fell while at tempting to board a moving train and was killed by it. The deceased was a successful umber broker and was a hale fellow well met, being popular and highly esteemed wherever he went. Mr. Barnes was about 85 years old and was married last September to Miss Mary Clark, of Clarkton. His remains were taken yes terday to the latter place for 1'iternient- The bereaved and sorrowing family of the young man have the deepest sympathy of all their friends and acquaintances. Mr. Malcom McNair has re cently returned from a visit to Greensboro. At a recent meeting of the commissioners or the town of Maxton, W. W- Smith was elected as a commissioner to nil tho place made vacant by the resig nation of D. W. Townsend. Messrs. McLean and Black were re-elected town attorneys for the next year. Miss Jessie Puller, of Lum berton, was in town this week, cho guests of the Misses Barnes. Mrs. McKay McKinnon and little son returned home Wed nesday after an extended visit, in the eastern part of the State. Misses Lillian Austin, of Red Springs, and Laura Dell Clark, of Clarkton, spent Wednesday night in town with friends. Mr- Allen McLean, of Laurin burg, spent several days in town this week. Miss Cammie McCaskill, of this place, and Miss Mary Eliza Robeson, of Red Springs, re turned Thursday morning from Cheraw, S. C-, where they were the guests of Mrs. J. H. Kinsey. Mr. and Mrs. J. h.
