Correpond-nce of Tli Knbesonlsn . An occasion that was very much - enjoyed was a banquet piven at the Maple Shade Hotel on Friday night by the alumni of the- University of North Caro lina. The table and dining room were beautifully decorated for the occasion. The menu was served in courses and showed how well Mrs. Weatherly knows how to set her table for such. The following alumni were pres ent, the youiig men each inviting a lady friend. Dr. and Mrs. H. W. McNatt, Mr. and Mrs. S. B. McLean, Dr. M. R. Gibson and Miss Kate Thompson, Mr. Leon T. Cook and Miss Emma Belle McRae, Miss Lucy Cobb and Mr. Jno. McKinnon, Mr. F. L. Black and Miss Mabel Wooten, Hon. G. B Patterson. Mr. F. L. Black, was toast-master and the following toasts "were given and responded to after a few words of welcome were made by Mr. Black: "The University nd the Alumni," by G. B. Pat terson; "Old College Days, "by Leon T. Cook; "University Day Poem" (original) Miss Cobb; "The Ladies," by S. B. McLean. After this the guests went to the par lor where first an organization of the alumni of Maxton was ef fected. Dr. McNatt was elected president and Mr. F. L. Black secretary and treasurer. The banquet was enjoyed very much by all present and" it is hoped to have a more elaborate one 12 months hence than this. The old college days were dis cussed by the men and the one lady alumnus of the place, Miss Cobb, until the time came to leave. The credit of this first gather ing together of the University Alumni is due to Miss Cobb. Misses Sallle McArn and Lil lian Smith, of Rowland, were visitors here this week. Misses Kate and Mary Suth erland are the guests of Miss Eliza McQueen this week. Hon. Lee S. Overman spent last Sunday nignt with Mr. A. J. McKinnon. He was on his way to Lumberton, where he made a speech- Mr. and Mrs. S. B. McLean returned home Wednesday morn ing from their bridal tour. Mr and Mrs. J. E. Avent and their little nephew, Leroy Utley, left Friday afternoon for their new home at Morganton where Mr. Avent has accepted the po sition as superintendent of the graded schools. Mr. W. H. Harding returned home Wednesday morning after an extended tour North, where he went on outness. Mr. Ed. McRae and Mrs. R. M. Williamsspent last Wednes day in Lumberton with friends- Miss Clarkie Belle McNair spent several days at the South ern Presbyterian College at Red Springs the first ol the week. Mr. H. B. Adams, a prominent young attorney from Laurin burg,spent last Wednesday night here with F. L. Black, Esq. Miss Maud F. McRae, of the Southern Presbyterian College at Red Springs, is athome for a few days this week. Miss Johnsie Bason, of Red Springs, spent a few hours in town last night. Miss Emma Belle McRae, of the Southern Presbyterian Col lege, came home last night to spend several days witn ner par ents. There was a meeting of the stockholders of. the Warehouse Co- held here last Wednesday The affairs of thisconcern showed up well and the management were doing their full duty. The books showed a dividend of 14 percent, had been earned. It was or dered that 10 per cent, be paid over to the stockholders and that the remaining 4 per cent, be ap plied to the surplus account. The following directors were elected: A. J. McKinnon, A. Shaw, A. M. McKinnon, H. G. Hill, E- F. Mc Rae, J. L- McLean, D. A. Patter son; and the following officers were elected: E. F. Conley and Miss Bertha Cade were quietly mar ried at the home of Mr. J.W.Hall last Wednesday night at 8:30 o'clock. The ceremony was per formed ay Rev. P. R. Law. The bride wore a gray coat-suit and hat to match. They left immedi ately for Washington and Niagara Falls. We wish theai a long and happy life. Our young people were most pleasantly entertained at the hos pitable home of Mr. H, M. John last Wednesday evening, the amusements being various games and music. Toey also , attended a quilting party at Mrs. Carl Howard's last night. Our girls are getting quite domestic of late Shelling Peas" and "quilting" Miss Emma Currie spent Wed nesday at Red Springs shopping. Miss Pauline Stamps spent a few days at Shannon last week visiting friends. Miss Eva Cade, of Salem burg, came home to attend the Conley - Cade marriage. Mr. J. W. Hall returned home from Florida Saturday. We are glad to see Mr. A. L. Shaw out again after quite a severe attack of acute indiges tion. An error occurred in last week's issue. Mr. Ed. Sikes, of Perry, Fla., was expected home but didn't come. In compliance with Special Order No- 56, from adjutant-gen eral headquarters, there was an lection held in the armory of the Lumber Bridge Light Infant ry to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Capt. J. W. Hall, which resulted asfollows: First Lieutenant J. B. Malloy elected Captain, and Sergeant D. A. Barlow was elected first lieu tenant. There was a good atten dance at the meeting. All seem ed enthusiastic and both officers were elected by acclamation. The company held its annual target practice today on the rifle range and contested for three gold medals and one gold-head cane presented to the company by that , loyal and big hearted honorary member, Ed. Curfie, and one sharp-shooter's medal, which were' won as follows: First prize, J. F. Pitman; sec ond prize, W. H. Freeman; third prize, Capt- J. B. Malloy; fourth prize, W. W. Smith; fifth prize, H. Mr. Johnson, of Japan, will lecture in the college audi torium Monday night. The entertainment given at the North Carolina Military Academy Monday evening by the Athletic Association was quite a success, the boys clearing about fifteen dollars. We are having delightful weath er for gathering crops. Miss McBuie, trained nurse from Fayetteville, is nursing Mr. Daniel McLeod. The workmen are making rapid progress on the new Presbyte rian church. Our regular quarterly commu nion at the Presbyterian church Sunday.
