The Bright Jewels Society of the Methodist church gave a potato and Halloween party, at the home of Mr. and Mrs O. C Norment Thursday evening frota 7 to 9 o'clock. . Seventy-live invitations .were issued .with the request that each recipient bring as many po tatoes as they were years old. When the crowd assembled, it was found that about 20 bushels of potatoes had been contributed. The goests were met at the door by Misses Amanda McDiarmid, and Annie Neili Fuller, and Messrs. Wallace Norment and Paul Paris. From, there they were conducted by two of the young receivers to the large ware room at the rear of the house, where they were greeted by other members of the society. The walks of the building were covered with autumn leaves, and suspended from the ceiling, were a number of Japanese : lanterns, which lighted up the building with a weird glow, suggestive of witches and goblins. The try ing of fortunes were then begun. Apples hanging from the ceiling were, after many attempts, bit ten by some.although many tried in vain. The extinguishing of can dles; walking blindfold to plates of water and other tests of for tuna were the cause of much merriment, and their shouts of laughter and mingled chatter continued unceasingly Throogn the hours. At the rear of the building a curtain hung, which when drawn aside, repealed the pumpkin head with red, staring eyes and ghostly grjn suspended in mid air- Beneath it wereftthe fortune tellers, Miss Ruth Wha ley, attired in a long, black cape and pointed hood; theghost,Miss Annie Neill Fuller, looking awe some in her white robe and white face with shining-eyes and1 the little witch, Miss Jean Jones, with black robes and tall red cap, stooping over a gipsy pot, and stirring up torture. Each in turn heard their future; some causing much laughter. Fortunes written on strips of paper, were then taken through the crowcNmd distributed, after wbickiruit was given out to the crowd. And last, sacks of pea nuts were suspended from the ceiling and struck by a blind folded boy, these falling to the floor, scattered all over the room, and the scramble by the chil dren was a most amusing sight. After playing various games on the lawn, the children wended their way to their homes, assur ing their, entertainers of a most delightful evening. The Bright Jewels felt more than repaid for their efforts, by the evident enjoyment of their guests, and the generous contri bution of potatoes for.which they desire us to express their sin cere thanks. It is learned, in conversation with officials here that there is strong possibility of the President commuting to life' imprison ment the death sentence of the two negro mutineers now in jail at Wilmington. The district attorney, Harry Skinner, pro secuted them fwith great vigor, but now popular sentiment at Wilmington is very greatly in favor of a lesser sentence than death. These prisoners have conducted themselves admirably during their long imprisonment. It is said that Colonel Skinner will soon go to Washington and that he will probably assent to c imrn uTatTo n .hTcTTh as . been so unred by the ministers at Wil- iiu 'ton and other?.
