SHANNON NEWS LETTER. Laying of Corner Stone of Pres byterlanChurch at Red Springs -For Better Roads Personal. V i ri'tipoiKlence of The Kob'sonlan. After some time we will try to pen a few lines for the paper. Since our last Mr. A. D. Conely has had tussle with typhoid fever but he is convalesent now, we are glad to report- Mrs. N. A. Cobb has been sick for sometime with "Lo grippe" but is recovering slowly now. Mr- Richard Baxter has been in poor neaitn tor sometime uut uis iieaim is buuiewuat proved so he was able to coi4y& the gin with cotton on the 9th, and had the misfortune of falling in the hopper and got his leg cut and bled badly. We did intend to write regard ing the Public roads but we see that the editor has called the at tention of our newly elected of tiers to the necssity of keeping their campaign promises, and has referred to the road law. We .are hoping to see some work done before the meeting of our law makers. If our roads can be graded as some one says, for $38, per mile we might have more work accomplished with the 1906 taxes than has been done up to this time- Some of the brid ges are in need of repairs here (about and the sand is deep in some places. I think the roads could be graded cheaper by let ing the roads out by contract. We attended the laying of the corner stone of the Presbyter ian church at Red Springs on the 8th snd enjoyed the occasion very much the exercises by the lnassonic order were witnessed by a large number of the prater, nity and by the schools of the place besides quite a large num ber of ladies and gentlemen from the town and surrounding coun ty. All seemed to enjoy the day. Prof J. B. Carlyle was the orator of thp day- His address was just, five. Though the crowd was large the dinner was ample and was just elegant. There have been near 1100 bales of cotton gined here to Nov. 10th. The cotton crop is short in this section- The estimates run any where f.om t' to 3-4 of a crop. Shannon, N. r.., Vuv. loth. Mr. Smith McKeithan is erect ing a new residence on Fulton street. In no time past has Raeford enjoyed more unbound prosperi ty than xtaw. At present there is not a store vacant and several new dwelling houses built in the last two weeks are almost finish ed. The addition of a new fac tory, a good high school and the proposed electric lights are evi dences of the town's growth. It is gratifying to know that the prospects for the future are very bright. The Halloween party given in the school auditorium by the young men to the young ladies of the school last Friday night was unqualifiedly a succeiful one. Ghostly figures and weird tales haunted the participants long after the party had broken up. All expressed themselves as having a most enjoyable time- Raeford, N. C, Nov. 10th. SMYRNA NEWS.
