C, November Term Winds np Busi ness and Ad fooraed Yesterday Tne Grand Jury's Report Cases Disposed of. , Court adjourned yesterday evening1. The following is the report of the grand jury, to the Hon. W, B. Council, Judge Presiding. We, the grand jury, for the November term, 1906, of the Su perior Court for Robeson county, beg leave to submit to your Honor, the following report of our work: , We have Acted upon 45 bills, and have returned 37 thereof as true bills, and 8 thereof as not true bills- We visited the jail in a body, and found it in a very good con dition, but would suggest that the iron cells in the old jail build ing be removed to the new jail building and placed therein; we also recommend that the pris oners be provided with sufficient bedding to keep them comfort able, and that the building be properly heated at all times dur ing the cold weather. We also visited the County Home, and found the buildings very much in need of repairs, all buildings located there are in need of repairs and painting, and we recommend that same be done at once. We also recommend that sufficient bedding be furnished the inmates to keep them com fortable at all times during the winter season. We have, as suggested by your Honor, given careful attention and consideration to the condi tion of the Court House, and after full consideration, we respect fully report, that the present building is old and dilapidated and insufficient in size to conduct the business of this county with its large and growing population. We further report that it is unsanitary, cannot be properly lighted, heated or ventilated, and that there is not sufficient room for the various county officers. The county superintendent of public instruction and the board of education have been compelled to rent offices elsewhere, when they should be provided with of fices in the courthouse- We further report that in our a . opinion,. irom trie oesi miorma tion we can obtain, the vaults in which are stored all of the rec ords which have been filed in the offices of the clerk of the Supe rior court and register of deeds for more than a hundred years are insufficient h. size to hold all of the important records of the county, and that the said vaults are not fire proof, and in our opinion and from the best infor mation which we can obtain, we conclude that if the court house should accidentally catch fire and be5 destroyed that these vaults would not preserve the records, but that they would all probably be destroyed, thus entailing end less cost, trouble and litigation on the people of Robeson county whose land titles very largely depend upon the preservation of these records. We therefore earnestly recom. mend that the Board of County Commissioners of Robeson coun ty, take immediate steps to pro vide the county with suitable and convenient offices for the use of the public officers of the county, and above all, with absolutely fire proof vaults of sufficient size to-store all 6f the public and valuable records of the county. Respectfully submitted, . J. M. McNair, Foreman of the grand jury. . In, commenting on the jury's recommendation forbetter court house facilities. Judge Council said it was gratifying to him what they had done. He does not think the present court house is sufficient for the needs nor in keeping with the standing of the county. V Chas. The proceeds amounted to about $75.00 which will be devot ed to some benevolent purfwse. Hearst was not elected but he scared the Republicans out of ten years' growth. To the man who thinks Hughes will make an ideal governor we would say wait. The election has passed off very quietly, the number of peo ple voting being less than two years ago. This is to be regret ted, for while the vote this year was more a matter of form than a test of strength, there may come a time when every Demo cratic vote will be needed to save the county from Republican misrule- H.
