The cause of the awful wreck near Lawyers Depot 10 miles south of this city, yesterday morning, in which President Samuel Spencer and his party of prominent New York and Bal A ' lilt 1 nmore men tost tneir lives, is laid absolutely at the door of C. D. Mattoax, the operator who was in charge of the block tele graph station at Rangoon, Mat toax, who disappeared after be ing relieved less than an hour after the wreck, has nof been found, despite the fact that rail way detectives have scour d the country around the wreck and his home at Sandy Level, in Pittsylvania county, some 40 miles from the scene of the acci dent, on a small branch line of the Southern. An official of the Southern Railway late this afternoon stated that the company was desirous of apprehending Mat toax in order to secure a state ment from him that might throw some light on the causes that led him to allow two trains in the same block at the same time. This official was not prepared to state today whether or not the company would take steps to prosecute the missing operator and he did not then know if he could prosecuted under the laws of the State of Virginia. An examination of the tele graph sheets kept at the Ran goon and Lawyers block offices by the representative of The Associated Press discloses the fact that Mattoax train No. 33, the Jacksonville express, upon the block, the train passing his station, getting a clear track from him at 6:00 o'clock. , The operator at Lawyers, the next station ahead, claimed that Mat toax did not ask him for a ''clear track" for No. 33, and he there fore, did not know this train had "passed Rangoon. The block sheet at Lawyers bears out this claim. The sheets at both offices show that the operator at Ran goon asked Lawyers for a clear track for No. 37, a Washington & Southwestern vestibuled limited, and the Lawyers operator, not knowing No. 33 was in the block gave No. 37 the right of way at 6:14 and No. 37 passed Rangoon at that time. Simmered down, if Mattoax at Rangoon, had re ported train N. 33 in the block at Lawyers, then there would have been no accident, because the operator at Lawyers would have held No. 27 at Rangoon un til the Jacksonville train had cleared the block at Lawyers, no matter how long the delay1 might have been between the two offi ces. ladies' Skirts and Jacket at cost at W O. Pythians throughout the State will he interested in learning something about toe changes in the endowment rank which goes into effect with the new year. At a meeting of the supreme council, held in Chicago some time ago, it was decided to establish anoth er class in "jihe endowment rank, known as the fifth class, the pre sent class being the fourth class. In the new order of things, tho maximum amount of insurance available is $5,000 which can be secured in policies of $500 and upward. It provides further more that those who are carry ing $3,000, the present limit; or less, may take out new insurance in the fifth class in any amount, just so the maximum is not over stepped. There are changes in the rates and a more careful phy sican examination is required. In the fifth class there are five options. Option a provides insurance with a level premium, very similar to that given in the old line companies. After three years the policy becomes incon testible and on nonpayment of the premium, a paid-up policy or extended insurance may be se cured. The rates rre less than those' in the level premium com panies, such as the New York Life, the Mutual Life, the Equi table; the Penn Mutual, Mutual Benefit, Northwestern and the like. Option B"offers a twenty year paid-up policy, the privi leges being the same as in option. A Optians C D and E offer term policies, and others, all planned after those in vogue with the level premium companies. Mr- George H. Royster, of Greensboro, endowment bank organizer tor .North and. bouth Carolina, was in the city yester- terday, and in conversation with an Observer reporter, stated that the literature descriptive of the changes would be sent the offi cers of each lodge throughout the State at the earliest possible moment.
