Mayor Thompson explained that the question of a graded school for the town had been dis cussed by the Town Commission ers at different times and was brought to their special attention a few days ago; that by mere ac cident he had had a talk with an architect Friday and that the architect said that a graded school building the kind that would be suitable to Lumberton would cost $18,000. He also stated that Robeson Institute had offered to sell its building, the land on which it is located and the dormitory for $11,000. The architect thought that this build ing could be remodeled for $6,000 and converted into a good grad ed school building. Talks in favor of a graded school and of buying the Robe son Institute r)ropertv were made by Messrs. A E. White, Mayor Thompson. A. W. McLean, J. R. Poole, E. J. Britt, G- B. McLeod, Rev. A. E. Buker and Rev. Mr. Hedgpeth. After a full discus sion of the matter by these and others, the following resolution was offered by Mr.R.C.Lawrence and adopted unammouly: "Resolved, That it is the sense of this meeting that the town of Lumberton should have a grade! school system . under ; such :Vlan alTntlfer'eafter be- adoptetT' by 4 Another resolution was adopt ed that provides that the board of commissioners buy the prop erty of the Robeson Institute at $11,000 provided satisfactory terms for its purchase can be arranged- A motion was made ana car ried that a bill be prepared for a graded school and that $20,000 bonds, to mature not later than 30 years at 6 percent and that a tax of net less than 20 cents nor more than 30 cents be levied for maintaining the school. Lee at the opera house Saturday with appropriate exer cises. A most interesting pro gramme was carried out, mucn to the credit of those in charge and to the enjoyment of those present. The weather was per feet for the occasion. The programme was read by Mr. J. A. McAllister, who read in part General Lee's FarewiH Address tatheArmyof North era Virginia. ' This was follow ed by prayer by Rev. P. L Kir ton, pastor of the Methodist church. Mr. J-H. Myrover.the Drincina speaker of the occasion, was in troduced by Mr. M. G- McKen ft r 1 r i i zie. air. JMyrover made an excel lent address- He paid tribute due to the brave men of Robeson county and to their wives and daughters who suffered long for the lost cause. During bis dis course the speaker mentioned manv incidents that ar takinsr niace . in tne ooutn today, air Myrover said that Gen. Lee was no doubt the greatest soldier this country had ever produced. But to1 the man as a soldier he could not help but think it was the man behind the gun to whom as much honor should be paid. The Jove ov yy4t3soi& leader was the greatest tribute that could be paid any hero and when he said that the Southern soldiers in the battle of the Wild erness could go in tne jaws of hell but Lee to the ear this statement caused much applause. In speaking of the ladies dur ing these times oe mentioned how they wore home-spun cloth and used parched meal for coffee, how they suffered in oder that the men of the army should pro tect that which they thought to be the right. Then he contrast ed the end of the war, the triuov phal march of tho victors, with all their glory and grand array, the booming of cannons and glit tering bayonets., with all the pomp that belongs to the conqueror On the other side came the strug gling wearers of the Gray. There were no grand marches no music of the band, etc., but just the man such as he was. Towards the close of his ad dress the speaker mentioned the rapid development of the now South which is the off spring of the old, and may she continue to grow greater and greater as one united countcy but with the upright principles of the old South. After the address Judge Mc Neill, assisted by several of the ladies, presented crosses of hon or to the following veterans: Zack Chwis, Neill Graham, W. N. Speight, Wm. Purnell, C. Russ, A.
