Wahi)Rton Pout. - ,5r "The air of Dixie, ' is the only asset of the late Confederacy that remains to the Southern States," said GeaeralJulian S. Carr, com mander of the Confederate Vet- eran.Si Association or iNortn Car olina at the Raleigh yesterday General Carr is a resident of Durham, N. C-, and for twenty five years was president of one the largest tabacco manufacur ing companies in the South-' He was a private in the late war and surrendered with Lee at Appo mattox. "It is not because of any bitter ness the Southern people feel that they applaud the tune of "Dixie,' " added General Carr. "It is because it recalls memories of that valiant body of soldiers who fought against the North in a struggle which they believed at the time was right- It is the only Confederate air that lives fresh in the memory- 'The Star Spangled Banner' receives as much homage in the South, I dare say, as it does in the North. ,1 have been in various places in the North, and I have heard 'Dixie' encored as enthusiastically as I ever heard it in the South. "I do not believe there is any : State in the South where the people refuse to rise when The Star Spangled Banner' is played. In my State of North Carolina I I have had the opportunity of leanring the feeling that exists regarding the late struggle, and I must say there are very few per sons who retain any bitter feel ing against the North. It would be a misstatement to say there were none- A few old soldiers of the Confederacy remain who will carry their bitterness to the grave, but they make up a very small proportion of the whole. "It is worthy ot note that North Carolina lost more men in the civil war than any State in the South. The number of killed and who died was 40,275 and the next largest number was in South Carolina, which lost about 4)K a missionary society at New berry, where she was treasurer of the religious association Sheriff Buford came to Asheville several days ago and located Mnttie- He immediately took her into custody. At the time the woman was employed as cook by Mr. W.,E. Shu ford Mattie is a good cook and Mr. Shuford didn't relish the idea o: losing his valuable servant. Any way, thi woman denied the cnarges. sue refused to go without requisition papers, and forthwith the sheriff from South Carolina made request that his Governor secure from the Gover-lk nor of North Carolina requisition papers. In the meantime, Mr Shuford's desire to retain his cook increased and counsel was' employed. In fact, counsel, and able counsel, has been employed on both sides. Saturday afternoon Mr. Prank Carter, of counsel for the woman appeared before Judge Pritchard in United States Circuit Court and secured a writ of habeas corpus to prevent Sheriff Buford from taking the woman. In ap plying for the writ Mr. Carter alleged that the ojaarge that the woman had-embezzled funds was a fraud on justice and untrue. He alleged that the real motive in taking her to South Carolina was to return her to peonage and re quire her to do involuntary ser vice for one A. C. Workman, a Farmer of Laurens county. The charge of peonage gave an interesting turn to the c'ase. Judge Pritchard issued the writ and had the woman brought be fore him- Sheriff Buford was represented at the hearing by Judge James H. Merrimon, of Asheville, who presented the re gular requisition papers issued by Governor Glenn, of North Carolina, at the request of Gov ernor Ansel, of South Carolina, and moved that the writ be dis missed. The case will be heard by Judge Pritchard Saturday. For Twenty-one Years B ooco , On ssa Far IB TRADE MAHK REGISTERED f F. S.
