FULLE LUMBERTON NO. CA. April iSth vertiae In TM'ERC BESON IAN Mr. E. J. Brill Choice ol Largely Attended Meeting. Tbe meetinr of the United Voters was held Monday evening in accordance "with the call. De spite the bad weather, the meet ing was largely attended. Mr. R.E.Lee called the assemblage to order and requested Colonel N. A McLean to act as chairman and explain tbe object of tbe meet ing. Colonel McLean on assum ing the cbair, explained in a few well-chosen wor'ds,that this meet ing was for the purpose of select ing a ticket which would be bound to no faction or set of men, and which would have at heart the best interests of all the people; that the people were tired of cer tain institutions attempting to dictate the policy of tbe town, and name the officers who -were to represent its citizens Mr. E. M- Britt was asked to act as secretary of the Meeting. The Cbair then declared the first business of the meeting was to select a candidate for Mayor Mr. J. G. McCormick therefore nominated Mr. E. J- Britt, saylng that there was no man in Lum berton better qualified to' fill the position under existing condi tions than Mr. Britt; that even his enemies dare not question his integrity and honesty of purpose; that he would guarantee that he would be controlled by no inter ests save those of tbe people and that he had never been allied to any faction; was committed to no man's Cause, except the peo pie, and under no obligation, to no set of men nor any institu tion. At this juncture, the question was raised as to whether, all of them who were present would be morally bound to support .the ticket named. Tbe Chair ruled that all those who attended and participated would be morally bound to support the ticket nam ed. Mr. J. A. McAllister then arose and presented the name Of Mr. w. O. Thompson.saying that all the good things which Mr. McCormick had said about Mr. Britt, applied with equal force to Mr. Thompson. Mr. McCormick then arose and desired to know if attendance alone without participation was sufficient to bind those present. Tho Chair ruled that it was. Mr. W. H. Humphrey appealed from the decision of the Chair Mr. McCormick seconded the appeal. The question was submitted to the body and the Chair sustained by a considerable majority. Mr. McAllister thereupon withdrew Mr. Thompson's name, and along with a number of others, includ- Mayor Thompson, Sheriff McLeod, W. I. Linkhawr l M. McAllister, and others, withu revv from the Meeting. Everything moved smoothly thereafter. Mr. Britt was named by-acclainatiou. Dr.' N. A. Thompson, Mr. Ed. B. Freeman, and Mr- I L. Pope were unanimously named for the two year commissioners and Messrs. J. D- McMillan, Jr., C M. Fuller and K. E- Iee for the one year term. Judge T- A. Mc Neill, Messrs. J. B. Pitman and F. Gough were selected for the Board of Audit and Finance- A committee was appointed to notify Mr. Britt of his nomina tion, and escort him to the Court House. Mr. Britt came forward and made an- excellent straight forward speech, saying that if he consulted his own personal incli nations ,and interests, that he would refuse to accept the nomi nation and that he was in no sense a candidate, but he could not refuse to heed the will of the people as it had been expressed tonight. He said further that he was committed to no Cause other that of the people md if elected, he would be mayor of the whole town and serve it as such to the best of his ability. Mr- Britt was cheered to the echo. At the conclusion of the speech, a resolution was unanimously adopted pledging each one pre sent to give to the ticket his hearty support and do all he could for it. After a few remarks frp.'.i the Uiiairman, tne Mceima aajour.i -i Fire at Gaddysvllle. Mr. J. R. Burns' residence, at Gaddysville, came very near be ing destroyed by tire Tuesday af ternoon. The fire originated from the ash box that was left under the kitchen stbve- The family were away at the time, with the exception of Mrs Burns.who was in the front part of the house and knew nothing of the fire until one of the colored bands ran from the field and gave the alarm. Others were work ing near and water and buckets were handy, so the fire waa0on under control. The damage done will not amount to over $25. At tbe rate the wind was blowing, had it been unnoticed for a few minutes longer, tbe house could not have been saved. - Miss Klebardson Married.
