Poteat wa9 on tire, and in a lit tle while smoke was coming out of the entire room- The alarm was given and in a few minutes the house and yard was full of commencement visitors, students and people of the hill. ' AlUhands went to work immediately to check the fire nnd to remove the It owuicu iui a t unci uucfcu . . v. i v was no hope of saving the resi dence. Stronge men worked heroically with buckets and wa t jr, but little headway was made till tire extinguishers could be brought from the college build ings- The extinguishers were placed only a few days ago. Had they not been available the residence of the president of the college would most probably be a mass ruins tonight in the midst of the commencement ex ercises Class day exercises had been concluded just a short while be fore fire broke out, and had these exercises still been in progress the fire would have won. There was much excitement, but the work of the volunteers was well done. Considerable damage was caused by fire and water. Much sympathy is felt for Prof. Poteat and his family. We are in the midst of commencement and the tire was most Unfortunate, The fire is thought to have been start ed by rats in the garret where a lot of books and other combust Sbfeete stored: GROWTH OF METHODISM. Interestlna Letter From Mr. W. II. Humpnrey A boat Lumber ton Methodists. A Blood-Thirsty Maniac. Jack White, a crazy negro who lived at the Miami Mines, about six miles south of Concord city, assaulted his wife with a knife and murdered his 4-year old daughter by cutting her throat from ear to ear Thursday night about 1- o'clock. Lindsay Lord and a number of other workmen about the place made a rush for the man and after a terrible struggle, securely tied him to the floor of the house in which he had committed the horrible death-dealing slashes- He was held captive until Friday morn ing when officers went out to the scene and took him to jail. The negro appeared to be per fectly rational Friday afternoon, but evaded or did not know what to answer when questioned- At no time had his mental condition been considered dangerous, although the man had frequently of late made threats of wha. he would do. The communication re fers tlatteringly to the progress of Methodism in Lumberton, showing that as the commercial and social interests of the town advances, the development of the church keeps pace. Mr- Humphrey writes: This is our first year as a station. Here tofore we have had preaching only two Sundays in the month, excepting that we had usually a third Sanday night service. Last year the church at Lumberton paid $500 of the $900 salary for the charge. A majority of the Lumberton Methodists, as well as the members of the country churches, wereenthusiastic for a division, but we heard that the Conference had sent ua preacher with five in family one who had been commanding a salary of $1,250 to $1,500, and had been supplying some important city churches. Though fearful of the result, The membership received the pastor with cordiality, and pre pared to make the best of the situation. We had practically no financial system. A few members bad been paying what was paid for the support of the Gospel, and a very large per cent paid nothing at all. The Conference sent us an able pastor when it sent Rev. P. L. Kirton. He did not seem discouraged, but fell in with his part of the work. He is just growing on our peo ple daily. Already he has re ceived into the church ten mem bers, all of whom are valuable ac quisitions to our church. Our church here is evidently taking on spiritual life Our people are delighted with the lascor, and he seems to be well satisfied with his charge. 1 feel iat I would be Tt-ci,',,inf to my dutv if 1 did not say in this eon '.ectinn that I'roli.'or Kirtoo has Ji.vi.y family and an ideal min-st'.-rV, wife.
