THE BANK OF LUMBERTON, More Accommodation and Oblig ing Iban City Boys, and Tbey are Steady and Reliable A Boston employer of labor well known among business circles in that city says that be will ask no more city boys into his employ. He declared that city boys, the kind born and bred in the big cities, do not make as faithful and efficient employees as those from the smalltowns and the country. Therefore, he says: "I have determined in the future to hire none but boys from the towns and communities surburban to Boston. The best material comes from the farm, and I am always ready to make an opening for the town or community bovs in my business." When questioned as to the qualities in which the country boy excels the city-bred boy, this large employer said: ' Coun try boys are lar more accommo dating and obliging than city boys, and what is even more ap preciated by an employer, they are steady and reliable. Their time and thoughts are not en grossed with the so-called plea sures of the city, and thev are willing and anxious to learn and make progress in the world. The city boys feels satis tied to earn a little u.oney and squander it, thinking only of the present. The country boy wants to get on in the world, and he succeeds while his city cousin wast s his time." This is high praise, certainly, out it is strictly true, as every city employer knows. The boy from the country should find world of encouragement in such commendation. There is a de mand for him a demand based on the qualities for which per haps, he had been inclined to un derrate himself, as "too fresh behind the times." The sterling qualities that country fe as a rule br ds in a boy are tie very qualities that city em ployers are looking lor, and glad ly welcome when tbey discover them. This is only one evidence . of the assertion that 'we are going back, in America, to old-fashion ed principles." Honesty, relia bility, courtesy, modesty, help fulness, ambition, economy, will ingness to work hard and make work the chief thing in life these are old-fashioned qualities and it is refreshing indeed to find them once more in demand Country boys, with country characters and qualities, the city wants you! It wants the new moral and industrial bipod that you bring into it. It wants your firm moral and intellectual fibre as well as your strong muscles and powers of endurance. As the employer quoted says. The best material comes from the farm. " The boy from the coun try is at a premium, and it is time that he rated himself as he is rated. New York Diupsteh, isth. Fifteen hundred hungry school children attracted by the pros- j pect of a free hot dinner, were in a riot today in front of a restaur ant at 274 Grand street, and be fore the police could restore; order by assuring the little ones that all would be fed the plate glass window was pushed in. The restaurant accomodates only 480 children, but thrice that number gathered-AdolphLorbee, the restaurant keeper, assured them that there was food enough for all, but those in the rear be came impatient, lest there be not enough time at the noon hour- Many of the children said they had not eaten in two days. Their parents bad no work and there was no food in the house. In view of these conditions, the re8tav,,or,' '".caper sent word to all of the schools in his neighbor hood that he would give free din ners to children who applied be tween noon and 1 o'clock each day. The second and third floors were turned over to the children, the menu comprising soup, a mpn.t oi-der. vegetables, rolls of bread, and tea or coffee. It was while the first set of diners were eating that the trou ble occurred today. Ibe re maining children stood in the rain in a line that went half way around the block, but they kept pushing ahd struggling till the two policemen on duty seat for the reserves of the Eldtldae street station under Inspector Burfield. Before they arrived the children had smashed the plate glass windows. None of the children was cut hv the erlass or injured in the crash, and Mr. Lorbee declined tn pxnress anv reurets at the accident to his property, an nouncing that he would continue the free meals. Cannon Boom Started la 8tU Die trlct. Washington Correspondence Raleigh News and Observer. St News reached here today of a ! strong movement'in North Caro lina to elect delegates favorable to the nomination of Speaker Cannon. The fight is to be in augurated in the 8th district, and will be extended to the other dis tricts intheState. Most of the lead ing Republicans in the 8th din trict have enlisted in the move ment. The plan of campaign was formulated by one of the Speak er's trusted lieutenants, who vis ited the State some ten days ago, going from this city. With the old Blackburn following as a nu cleus the Cannon people have al igned with them ex Congress man Linney, Solicitor Mose Har shaw, Chas. Cowles and Clint Wagner. Although Wagner is a son-in law of Collector Brown, he has no love for the administra tion. No man ever received worse treatment at the hands of the President than he. After unre servedly promising him the col lectorsbip Mr. Roosevelt ignored this pledge for thelsimple pur pose of embarrassing ex-Repre sentative Blackburn. In addi tion to this combination, John Randleman, of Salisbury, who is for the nomination of Vice-President Fairbanks, will line up with the Cannon forces to prevent the selection of the Tatt delegates. The moral support of Republi cans like ex Judge Bynum and Tyre Glenn will also b6 felt in the 8th district contest in opposition to the organization forces. Pres ent indications are that the fight for delegates to ihe Republican National Convention in the 8th district will be one of the most spectacular in the entire South- Oklahoma's Perfec. fl oney "We will pay you Interest, Compounded every tnree montna, ana tnis wui cause your uepoa jtto Continually Grow. : : ; : : A large number of Satisfied Customers is our Strongest Endorsement. : : : : : Open an Account with us, Either Large or Small, and Begin the Saving Habit To-day. Baltlmo:eSun. ' Oklahoma promises to rival New Zealand in the thorough going character of its legislation. A measure just passed by the House of Representatives for the regulation of hotels provides that sheets shall be nine feet long, so that the pedals' of citizens shall not hereafter protrude from under the cover. The sixfooters of Oklahoma have a grievance in the memory of . cold nights when they found it impossible to wrap up both head and feet in the hotel sheet, and they have elected a Legislature responsive to their behests. The people's aesthetic susceptibility having been jolted by the sight of cracked dishes on j hotel tables, their representa tives in the Legislature have passed also a bill prohibiting the use on hotel tables of any "cup, disb, vessel or receptacle for food that has cracks visible to tie naked eyes." The effete East ought to appreciate if it cannot imitate this exacting nicety of taste. That it characterizes the moral attitude of the forty-sixth State, as well as its sense of fit ness in chinaware, is proved by the enactment by both House and Senate of a law providing jail sentences for lobbyists. Members of the Oklahoma Legis lature, being a new broom, pro pose to sweep the State clean of evildoers of all kinds. They themselves cherish no doubt lofty ideals, as all statesmen should. When they find time to ban bv statute trifling sins like short sheets and cracked dishes, their provision against the gross er evils of modern society must be unusually impressive and complete- The next job will be to find graftless officials who will enforce their paradisiacal code. A. C. L. Will Probably Eater Ral elgb. KaleiKh Correspondence Charlotte Observer. Over twenty years ago the At lantic Coast Line made a survey for what was known as the Spring Hope branch to Raleigh, but work wrs stopped at Spring Hope, a mass of material being stored there ready for the exten sion. Some sort of an agree ment was made by the big rail way, including the Southern and the Seaboard Air Line, that the road should not be extended to Raleigh but that there should be a sort of division of terrjrory, but this agreement has new lapsed by limitation and has also been, in a general way, with drawn or ended, and now it seems that the Spring Hope branch is coming on to Raleigh A lumber company is now mak inga survey for it. There is splendid timber along the route, the distance being now quite twenty-five miles, and there is also some very fine land. It is understood that the road will be a standard one and will ban die passenger travel etc., and very naturally the Atlantic Coast Line will be interested in it. Raleigh will be an important point for this road, and the rival ry between this road and the Norfolk & Southern, which is now so marked in the eastern part of the State, naturally makes the Coast Line more de sirous to get into Raleigh When the union passenger sta tion was built here, space was left for the Atlantic Coast Line to have its " tracks and this space yet remains. It was felt by the authorities that some day the Coast Line would come in, and it seems probable. Partial Programne ol the Press Association Meottafto be Held la Charlotte ta April.
