Spring Time and the Birds and Trees Mr. and Mrs. Banter's Loss From Fire Farmers too Negligent In Regard to Insur anceAn Old "Guinea Nigger" Most Beautllul Woman In tbe World and the Best Cook In tbe World. Correspondence of The Robesonian. Everything betokens, these latter days, the approach of spring-time, and I am sitting by the window enjoying the musical twitter of the dear litttle birds as they flit about amid the branches of the trees. I have always been glad that we built our home on the edge of a wood land, in which we have a varied assortment of trees, from tbe stately pine to oak, hickory and the dog-wdbd, which latter will ere long don her robes of snowy white and delight our vision with her loveliness. We have also a branch near by, on the borders of which the cool green mosses, delicate ferns, and odorous heart-leaves abound, all of which are to me "a beauty and a joy forever," for I am deeply in love with nature, and her marvelous gifts to the childrenof men. Since I last wrote you Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Hamer, two of our near and excellent neighbors, have suffered a great loss from fire, which had its origin about the stove flue in the cook room The burning occurred about 1 p. m. on Monday, the 9th ult, and just at a time when the wind was blowing almost a gale, in consequence of which only the furnishings from the parlor and one bed-room were saved, while that of the upper story, dining room and kitchen, was almost a total loss. Several cribs, and in fact all out-buildings, save a barn and hennery, were also burned, though fortunately no live stock was destroyed. Corn to the amount of several hun dred bushels was lost. No in surance on any of the buildings makes the loss even in building material very severe, to say noth ing of the destruction of other valuable property Farmers as a rule are too neg ligent in regard to insuring their property, and when a tire occurs they often suffer a total loss, with nothing to fall back upon. Your correspondent of last week under the signature otf "O ," stirred up some old time memories, or traditions rather, in which that same old Savenir darkey was an actor. He was a "Guinea Nigger," or was so called, and lived and died near here, but could never spear only very imperfect En glish, though he lived to a great age. His wife was named Dinah, and it was related that on one occasion this couple were off one night visiting without the necessary permit, or written "pass" from their owner. So bye and bye the patrol was heard of two famous women Mis" Hood, .f Nova Scotia, aged 2i, said to be the most beautiful woman in the whole world; and Mrs. Martha Winfield, of Indiana, aged 87, the best cook in thJ world, who, notwithstanding her advanced age, is still a prac tising expert in her line, and is passionately fond of her profes sion. She has prepared meals in fine style throughout the ad ministrations of Van Buren, Ty ler, Polk, Pierce, Buuchanan, Lincoln, Grant, and the rest of them, and is yet found Queen of the kitchen in this year of grace of Theodore Roosevelt. The ed itor who published the sketch of the two women is just and wise enough to award his preference and praise to the aged Queen of the home, instead of the Queen of world famed beauty, who, he fears, knows nothing of cook ing, sweeping, ana trie general science of home-making, but de pends entirely upon her physi cal charms to carry her through life. - Mr. and Mrs. R. To the Editor: As I have seen a good deal in the papers here ( f late advising1 farmers whom .they ought to support for Governor, please allow a farmer from the eastern part of the State to jive his views in regard to this matter. On the 12th day of May.1898, tbe Democratic campaign was opened that meant so much to our State in the town of Lau rinburg. We had two distin- guised orators with us oh that occasion one from the East, Charles B. Aycock, who was honored alter that by receiv ing the unanimous support of th Democratic party as their choice for Govertor at our State convention. We felt proud of our western brethern then for their unanimous sup port of ourCharlesB. Aycock, of the East. Farmers of the East, let us not forget our brethern of the West. And when our State convention meets let us all give our unanimous vote for their choice, the Hon. Locke Craig, the man who opened the cam paign, of 1898 in the town of Laurinburg, who has been in the pent of. battle ever since, and has not received that re ward that is due to him for his services. Respectfully, Hector McLean. Laurinburg, N. C., March 1908. Twenty-Fifth Annual Convention Of the North Carolina Sunday School Association. To the Editor o. Tie RoWsonlan.
