Shingles are expensive, but they are actually cheaper during ten years than a ready roofing which needs frequent painting to keep it free from leaks. Amartite roofing costs less than half as much as shingles and does not need painting either. It is easier to lay and will give years of long hard service without any care. Amatite has a real mineral sur face. That's why it needs no painting. Once laid on your roof Shingles your building has real protection. Amatite is easier to lay than ever this year. The liquid cement for the laps does not require heating before use. A three-inch smooth margin is left at the edge of the sheet so that the laps will be tight fitting and easily cemented. The large headed nails which we fur nish save fussing with caps, which rust easily. Amatite is up to date. Send for a Sample and look it over. You '11 never buy any other. N. A Challenge for a Debate The Far miner That Pays Other Matters. Correspondence of The Robesonian. The Long Branch correspon dent said if the Mt. Eliam boys wanted another debate to let him know, so I take this method of letting him know we are out of amusement at present and are anxious for another debate; so if he will get a query and let us know which side we are on we will try them as much as one time. Two or three of us will speak, whichever they wish, and we will play them on our own diamond or on theirs, whichever they like best. They may take this as a challenge and let us know at once. Mr. Henry Stephens, who lives near Marietta, spent part of last week here. Miss Lettie Branch spent this week here with Miss Dolar Stephens. Mr. M. C. Britt spent Thurs day with his father, Mr. C. A. Britt. I had the pleasure of attend ing the concert at Bloomingdale Thursday night. I enjoyed it very much. Bloomingdale is one of the best schools of the Broad Ridge. Mr. John J. Mr. Eli Phillips is singing here instead Walters, as reported last week. Setting out tobacco is the or der of the day at this time and if the worms eat all that's put out this year they have a job ahead. Mr. Leonard Britt has cabbage headed ready for table use. It pays the farmers to "raise what they eat and eat what they raise." Messrs. June and Richard Ivey spent Sunday here. Mr. Archie Britt is building a new pack house for the tobacco he is expecting to raise. I do not see why the farmers of this county don't raise wheat for their own use, for it would be cheaper than $7.50 to $8 dol lars per barrel. Among the several who at tended the concert at Blooming dale were Messrs. Okey Steph ens, Orion Martin, Grover Britt, W. M. Britt, Thad. Stone, and Misses. Katie Stone and Dolar Stephens. We are glad to hear that Prof. Williams' wife, who went to the Highsmith Hospital at Fayette ville, is improving. Mr. Wych Floyd visited his father near Bloomiugdale last week. Of all the systems of graft an ingenious age nas produced, a negro preacher of this place has i invented the most unique. He has been holding a revival for the past month and there have been, it is said, 110 conversions. When a nigger is converted he issues a certificate like this: This is to certify that sister Jane Jones has this day been born into the i kingdom of God," etc., and charges the poor deluded tool the sum of 50 cents for her pass port into Glory. A number of them have been framed by a picture dealer and are prized by the holders more than the left hind foot of a graveyard rabbit. Swept Over Niagara. Last week The Chronicle told of how some of the people of Anson and Union counties were neeced oy a iaKir who came along wnh clothing paterns which he sold at good prices, the bait being that a tailor would follow in a day or two and make the cloth into clothing. Of course, the tailor never showed up Right on the heels of this ex perience and in the same tern tory, a swindler last week sold ; big line of mowers, reapers, bug gies and other articles of like character to men and women white and black, and then skip ped with his booty, even leaving the livery stable man in the lurch. No doubt some of these victims were intelligent people. It is strange that in this day of newspapers and enlightenment these roving swindlers can find anybody with whom they might be able to drive a bargain, and yet the woods seem to be full of em. They would not bite twice at the same bait, but let some thing new come along and they fall cheerful victims. There seems to be no way of getting around the old saying that "fools and their money are soon parted.". come- liKl-hllNC: Whereas.
