Shingles are expensive, but they are actually cheaper during ten years than a ready roofing which needs frequent painting to keep it free from leaks. Amartite roofing costs less than half as much as shingles and does not need painting either. It is easier to lay and will give years of long hard service without any care. Amatite has a real mineral sur face. That's why it needs no painting. Once laid on your roof protection. Amatite is easier to lay than ever this year. The liquid cement for the laps does not require heating before use. A three-inch smooth margin is left at the edge of the sheet so that the laps will be tight fitting and easily cemented. The large headed nails which we fur nish save fussing with caps, which rust easily. Amatite is up to date. Send for a Sample and look it over. You'll never buy any other. N. JACOBI HARDWARE COMPANY. Agents. A Trip "Down South" A Section Sad Death of Neill McCallum Other ters. Correspondence of The Robesonian. Last 1 Wednesday I returned home from a trip down South, to the land not only of cotton, but a variety of other products, chief among which were vast helds oi splendid oats and fields of tobac co. The farmers in lower Mar ion are diversifying, and depend ing less on the kingly cotton crop than in former years. I was told by several of these thrifty, independent planters that the oat crop, well fertilized and followed by pea-vine hay, was far more profitable than low-priced cotton. They sow the grain in the early fall, arid I have never seen such a magnificent prospect, both as to quantity and quality. That is a fine section of coun try, the lands fertile, with clay sub-soil, and the farmers are wide awaKe, up-to-date, and us ing a great many modern labor saving implements. Mr. Me Laurin s farm is located on the banks of Buck Swamp and two miles from the Little Pee Dee lhere are two cnurcnes witnin a radius of two miles, and a splen did academy, only a mile distant, where they have annually an 8 months' school term, taught by excellent teachers, which insures fine educational advantages. The people are exceptionally clever, intelligent and gined to generous hospitality, and my sojourns among them are always fraught with much pleasure, though dur ing this late visit I was for some days real sick, and therefore de nied the privilege of visiting, and returning their kindly calls, which I much regretted. I met, among otners down tnere, your interesting correspondent from Dillon, Vidi who, with his wife, came up and spent the day with us a day much enjoyed by me, as they are both among my first ?cqua"ntarces in those parts, and are very entertaining. "Vidi" talks as he wiites, intelligently, and is well informed upon al points of interest, both past and present in fact, he is a superb nistorian, fluent, and easy .o: speech, rich in descriptive pow er .and altogether interesting. My trip was accomplished by private conveyance m company with the two litl'e boys, and en- ailed a journey ot 2o miles. Little Rock being about the half way point, we drove into a va cant lot, under the shade oi some arge old trees, feu both man and beast, met with the Methodist minister who lives near by, went into the parsonage for some water, and received from him he kindly courtesy which al- i 1 1 r-iii ways marKS tne true boutnern gentleman. Dillon, situated 5 miles below Little Rock, was al so on our route, so the monotony of travel was pleasantly broken. This latter town is quite a com- mercial centre, surrounaed as it is by-splendid farms and farm ers, and the town itself is full of enterprising business men Crossing over Maple bwamp, IS YOUR MONEY SAFE ? The grand-babies were the vic tims ot that intantile terror, whooping cough, but had passed the crisis and were doing nicely when I came away. I asked little four-year-old Hallie if she remembered her grandpa (the 'Squire). "Yes mam said she. She had not seen him in almost a year so I thought to test her memory. Has he any whiskers? I ask ed. "Yes mam" she replied. Well", said I, "has he any hair on his head?" After a little hesi tation, in which she seemed to be ruminating , she put her little hand up over her ear and, de scribing a circle, said, "He's dot a little bit aroun here and I was satisfied that her memory was correct. Well, I hear of no news in the Fork since my return. The neighbors generally are enjoying good health. Cotton planting is about over, and much of it is up and ready for chopping. So far as I hear there is little com plaint as to poor stands. The young corn looks thrify and small gram is doing well. During my visit at Mr. Mc- Laurin's I received the sad intel ligence of the death of Mr. Neill McCallum, of the Alfordsville section, an esteemed first cousin, the last of a once large family, ana one of the noblest, sweetest spirits, and kindest hearts that ever throbbed. How infinitely ad are these parting , of the ways, when loved torms and faces steal quietly away from us and the places that knew them snail Know them no more forever. One after another of the friends and eompan ions oi a hietime are passing awajrfrom earth, which is a forci ble reminder that we, too, must, ere long, join the hosts who have crossed over the river. Mr. Mc Callum was in his 74th year and leaves a wife, tnree sons, two daughters, and two little grand children, all of whom will sorely miss the gentle, indulgent, and loving husband and father, while I myself am sorrowing over the removal of one whom I so loved. On last Thursday I had a glad urpnse by a visit irom another dear cousin, with whom many happy, youthful days were spent nd whom I had not seen in al most two score years Mr. H. C McQueen, a native of your town but for many years a prominent citizen of Wilmington. He came down from Maxton "accompanied by two other of our "McQueen Clan" Messrs. Sandy and An gus McKinnon in a handsome auto driven by Mr. Van Duzen ot Wilmington. My cousin, Mr, McQueen, spent the day with us while his companions went on to Rowland on a business trip, re turning in the afternoon. Miss Julia McQueen, of Maxton came down on Tuesday last an is at present with her sister, Mrs. wo miles below Dillon, a drove Wiggins, in Rowland attending of beautifully plumaged birds, of a strange variety to me, new up on the road-side, and lighted in a small tree. Quick as a flash the grand-boy was out of the buggy, with his little rifle in hand, and in a few moments he came ud with one of the little strangers murdered. The color' the meeting of Fayetteville Presbytery, which convened in that town on Monday last. A decided change in the tem perature has sent us to the wood pile for fuel, and the fireside ieels quite comfortable today. While "down South" I enjoy ed eating several baits of fresh COUNTY CLAIMS PAID. County Commissioners Hold Regular Monthly Meeting Bili of D. W. McPhaul, of Lum berton, was appointed superin tendent ef health for the county for a term of two years. W. J. Mathews was appointed a special surveyor to survey en try for vacant lands. The board received from E. J. Britt, commissioner, a check for $145.55, partial payment on Mary E. Leggett land. W. P. McAllister was appoint ed road trustee of Lumberton township in place of W. I. Link haw, who refused to qualify. It was ordered that County Treasurer M. G. McKenzie be allowed one-tenth of one per cent, for delivering the proceeds of the sale of the $25, 000 bond issue. It was ordered that D. W. Bullock, ex-register of deeds, be paid the sum of $297.48, amount alleged to be due him at two cents per name for special ser vices in computing and listing the special road taxes for 1907. It will be recalled that the last Legislature passed an act di recting the board of road super visors that went out of office the first of April to pay this amount This the retiring board refused to do without an order from the Superior Court, alleging that Mr. Bullock had already receiv ed the amount he was entitled to under the former law. In its explanation of the matter the board of commissioners states that this payment was refused by the old board of supervisors upon the ground that they did not have sufficient time to do so. The commissioners state that it has been the custom since 1904 to pay the register of deeds 3 cents per name for his special services in computing road taxes, whereas Mr. Bullock only asked for 2 cents, and the board judged the amount to be due him. A number of rebates was al lowed. The monthly reports of Treas urer M. G. McKenzie and Sheriff E. C. McNeill were received and filed, the latter showing the following: Taxes Collected. i i Bad Backache Sack agoalet u mm woaca niter, my math, tnm feck CMt I It Mceuuyt Ni, h cu be p rerouted am reUered, wHta caaMd by luiala trouble, by talc lot a aiedldiM wtta apedflc, car., ore actioa, oa the female orfana Mi functions, which acts by re Bevtai the congestion, stopping the paii and building the organs aad fractions ap to a proper state Li ! health.
