2 THE! ISEM J-WEEKLY ROBES ONI AN WILL REDITRICT STATE. ALMOST A NEW COURT. Mr. Taft May Determine The Complexion Of The Supreme Tribunal. Washington Dispatch, 17th. The changes in the Supreme Court seem likely to make it al most a new body in the near fu ture. Justice Lurton has just been placed on the bench, and the president is considering his choice of a successor to the late Justice Brewer. Rumors that Justice Moody may resign on ac count of ill health are insistent, working with might although vigorously aeniea i wo this redisricting mem Ders 01 trie court, mei jus tice r uller ana Justice nanan, are near their seventy-seventh birthday. Should these three re sign, retire or the hand of death be laid upon them in the next three years, President Taft would equal the record for ap pointing justices since the organ ization ot the court, mat re cord was made by Jackson and equaled by Lincoln and Grant, each naming five members. Chief Justice Marshall set the record for service at 34 years. This was equaled by Justice Story, of Massachusetts, and Justice Field, of California. The CVnerallv Credited Rumor Afloat Among Democrats to This Effect A Slate Suggest ed by a Leading Politician. Charlotte Observer, It is said to be practically cer tain that the Democrats will re district the State after the cen sus is complete. Effort will be made to arrange the counties in such fashion as to leave the Re publicans out in the cold. In fact there is considerable talk to this effect. Several clever Dem ocrats are and main on proposition now. A well-known politician, whose name is famil iar from Murphy to Manteo, de clared several days ago that the Democrats should rearrange things so that all the district would return Democrats. He said that this could be done, leav ing fairly equal population in the several districts. "I would divide the State into districts as follows: "First district: Currkuck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquim mons, Gates, Hertford, Chowan, Bertie, Northampton, Dare, Tyr rell. Washington. Hyde and Beaufort couuties, which, by the shortest period ever served was Dy Justice narnson, 01 marymnu, who was a member of the court for only a year. Although there have been 63 members of the bench in the 120 years of its existence, represent ed by favorite sons in this list New York and Ohio head the roll with seven members each. Mass achusetts comes next with six. Maryland, Pennsylvania and Vir ginia have furnished five each, while Tennessee and Kentucky follow with three each, South Carolina, New Jersey, Georgia, Alabama, Illinois and California, two each, and Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Iowa, Miss issippi, Kansas, Michigan and Louisiana one each. At present Massachusetts has two members and Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana. California, Ohio and Tennessee one each. The youngest justice ever ap pointed was Justice Story, of Massachusetts, who was 32 when selected ;the oldest appointee was Justice Lurton, of Tennessee, 66. The ages of the present members are: imei Justice ruiier ana last vote for Governor, would give a Democratic majority of 7,366. "Second: Pitt, Martin, Edge comb. Nash, Wilson, Greene, Johnston and Harnet; majority, 7,030. "Third: Pamlico, Carteret, Craven, Jones. Onslow, Pender, Duplin, Lenoir, Wayne and Samp son; majority, 3,962. "Fourth: Franklin, Wake, Chatham, Durham, Orange and Alamance; majority, 3,813. "Fifth: Halifax. Warren, Vance. Person. Caswell. Rock ingham, Stokes and Surry; ma jority, 3,997. "Sixth: Bladen, Cumberland, Moore, Lee, Randolph, Guilford and Forsyth; majority, 2,990. "Seventh: New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus, Robeson, Scotland, Richmond, Montgom ery, Davidson, Davie, Yadkin and Wilkes; majority, 2, 629. "Eighth: Anson, Stanly, Ca barrus, Rowan, Iredell, Alexan der, Caldwell, Wataugua, Ashe and Alleghany; majority, 2,092. "Ninth: Union, Mecklenburg, Nervous I was very nervous," writes Mrs. Mollie Mirse, of Carrsville, Ky., "had palpitation of the heart, and was irregular. "On the advice of Mrs. Hattie Cain I took 2 bot tles of Cardui and it did me more good than any medicine I ever took. "I am 44 years old and the change has not left me, but I am lots better LJ since taking Cardui." IMsmb The Woman's Tonic Cardui is advertised and sold by its loving friends. The lady who advised Mrs. Mirse to take Cardui, had herself been cured of serious female trouble, by Cardui, so she knew what Cardui would do. If Cardui cured Mrs. Cain and Mrs: Mirse, it surely will cure you too. Won't you try it? Please do. "Tenth: Cleveland, Ruther ford, McDowell, Polk, Hender son, Buncombe, Haywood, Trans sylvania, Jackson, Swain, Ma con, Clay, Graham and Chero kee; majority, 633. "This would work like a top," continued the politician. "The districts would be within the re quirements of the constitution, and would look well. There would be one or two long ones, but that would not hurt. Let us see how it would shape up: Down in the first, Pitt and Martin would be replaced by Ber tie and Northhampton. The sec ond would be made up of por tions of the present first, second, fourth and sixth. The third would fall heir to Lenoir. The fourth would be composed of three counties of the old district and three of the old fifth. The fifth would have counties of the fourth and fifth; the sixth cf the fifth, sixth and seventh, and the seventh f the sixth, seventh 65; Justice McKenna, 67; Justice Holmes, 69; Justice Day, 61; Jus tice Moody, 57, and Justice Lur ton, 66. At present there are three Democrats on the bench, Chief JusticeFuller and Justices White and Lurton, while Justices Har-! Ian, McKenna, Holmes, Day and Moody are Republicans. Justices White and McKenna are Catho lics, while the others are of pro- testant profession or inclination. FOREST FIRES. in a Few Severe Punishment Cases Might Help. Charlotte Observer. Immensedamage by forest fires, says The Lumberton Robesonian, has been done in Robeson and i adjoining counties during the last few weeks. It is said that these fires are the result chiefly of carelessness; but in some in stances they are started purpose ly. The amount of damage re sulting has been very great. Winning Its Way Just as sure as the mountain stream wends its way to the mighty ocean, just so surely the Artistic Stieff Piano wins its way to the hearts of every critical music lover of America. As civilization ad vances criterions become more severe and in no one thing is this truer than in regard to music. To produce an article today that is even recognized as standard by the discriminat ing public requires the com bined efforts of the most skill ed artisans of the age. The height of the ambition of the manufacturer of this wonderful instrument for the past 66 years has been to offer a Piano that was per fect within itself, and after all these years of pains-taking care and experience this has been accomplished and today we are offering to the public, all music loving Amerxa, the greatest musical instrument of the 20th Century, The Ar tistic Stieff Piano.
