As a result of scraps between a white man and two negroes at St. Paul Saturday evening Stew art Edwards, colored, between 40 and 45 years old, was shot and dangerously wounded by Special Policemen H. E. Carter and Rate McCormick. Edwards was tak en to a hospital at Fayette vi lie for treatment and is not expected to live. The trouble began about 6 o'clock at the depot. Lewis Mc- Lean,white. and Will McKinnon, colored, both under the influence of liquor, got into a' knocking scuffle. Charlie Allen, white, part ed them and they went off in different directions. McLean Fatal Shooting: Scraoe Near Rowland on the Fourth. Eller called the convention to order shortly after the noon hour and made a notable address in which he advocated a State department of engineering with a divis ion of forestry, a divis ion of drainage and a division of public highways. Senator Overman, temporary chairman, followed with another notable ad dress in wThich he reviewed some thing of the manner in which the Republican party has betrayed the trust of the people and out lined tie plan of the coming -campaign. Hon. Walter E.Moore, of Jackson, was elected perma nent chairman. The nomination speeches were of a high order and ex-Governor Chas. B. Aycock was given an ovation when he rose to place in nomination Judge W. R. Allen. The following were elected -members of the State Democrat ic executive from this, the sixth, district: W. H. Prof. M. L. Lowrie, of Elrod, who was in town this morning, gives a glowing account of the anniversary meeting of the Lum ber River Mission Conference held at Hopewell Methodist church, near Elrod, Saturday. The conference began about 10 o'clock a.m. and Rev. C. C. Low rie was elected chairman, Prof, E. Lowrie, secretary. Only three choirs were represented. The balance of the programme was made up of dialogues and speeches by the children. A large crowd wa3 A Peculiar Situation. A rather peculiar situation exists at the jail about a negro who insists always upon giving his name in full as Robert Fre mont Graham. He has been sub renting some land near Maxton rom a man named Martin and was brought to jail during court wo weeks ago under a warrant from Justice G. C. Fisher stating hat he wras crazy. Under rep resentations to the court that there was no charge against him he negro was released by Judge Alien, but last week he was brought to jail again by Deputy A. Kitchin, wrho made affidavit before Clerk of the Court W. H. Humphrey that Graham wTas cra zy. Mr. Humpnrey had Graham examined by Drs. W.A. McPhaul andW.L. Grantham, who say that he is not crazy. The citizens where he has been living say that the negro is crazy and the doctors say that he is not crazy, so it seems that he is being held with out any right m law. Graham formerly ran a barber shop in Lumberton and seems well edu cated. He says he has seen ser vice in the Philippines and else where, and claims to have studi ed law. , money. Jenrette, prin cipal of Baltimore high school, near Fairmont, passed through Lumberton Saturday on his way to the home of his father-in-law, Mr. J. S. Oliver, at Marietta, from Greenville, where he at tended a summer school for two months. Mrs. Jenrette, who is assistant teacher at Baltimore, also attended the summer school atGreenville but was called home a few weeks ago on account of sickness in the family of her pa rents. The Baltimore school will open for the fall term about the first of September. It is said that it came to pass when the Robeson county delegation to the recent State convention reached Charlotte a certian Lumberton politician went at once and registered as chairman of the delegation from this county, no meeting for e'ec tion of chairman having at that time been held.
