Mc- as follows: Replying to Mr. Clifford's state ment that it was known to all the district after the primaries that Godwin was the choice of the voters and had a majority of the delegates to the conven tion, attention is called to the fact that no such claim was ever pub lished by Mr. Godwin's managers prior to the convention and the official returns show that he was short of a maiority.Mr.Clif ford's statement that in New Hanover county 23 delegates were present at the county convention who favored the nomination of Mr. Godwin and demanded that his strength be ascertained is branded as absolutely false, and they state that they can produce the wagon tn case of fire. These steps were taken by the town board at the instance of the fire company recently organ ized with Mr. Q. T. Williauis as chief. The recommendations were presented to the board through Mr.A.W. Peace, a member of the company, the company has on hand enough money to purchase the fire-alarm system and the cost to thetown of installingsame, it is estimated will not exceed 25. Arrangements are being made to discontinue the use of the stables in which the town mules have been kept on Water street near the standpipe. These improvements are much needed and mark a decided step forward over the old method of sworn proofs that the strength of haphazard fire alarms and draw mr. uouwm was nov uemanaea hcr hnoAwno-mia hvhnnH either in a precinct meeting or in the county convention. One J.H. Sykes, of Delgado precinct, arose in the convention and said, "I nominate H.L. Godwin." Sykes was a member of the executive committee from Delgadoprecinct, but he held no precinct meeting to ascertain Mr. Godwin sstrenth and came to the convention with out any credentials as a delegate, Mr. A.R.Currie, who has been night polliceman for some time, tendered his resignation, which was accented, and Mr. E.
