THE SEMI-WEEKLY ROEESONIAN. COMMENT. CRAIG ON BUTLER. Marion Butler would net fce worm mentioning but for the fact that he is boss of the Re publican Dartv in North Carolina . e. and there are many people who, strange as it may seem, are still deceived by him. He is worthy of nothing save the profound contempt of decent men. Read how Locke Craig laid bare this man's baseness and treachery in a RTipech at Black Mountain the other day: "The Republicans came back. The, era of fusion was like unto thp pra of reconstruction. I would not mention the recon struction. nor perhaps the time of f unionism, had not the Repub licans in this campaign put tor ward as their leader and cham- Dion a man who is the incarna tion of the evil of fusionism and who stands today fortheconsum mation of the greatest robbery of reconstruction. When the bonds that he would force North Carolina to pay were issued the poverty of the State was not her deepest distress. "For years she had been robed in consuming fire and ravaged by avenging armies. She had exhausted her resources in sup porting the Confsderacy. One hundred and twenty-five thous and of her sons had gone to the front and 40,000 of her children had been slain. There was mourning in every home. Her property was gone, the recon struction Legislature, or, by the org es that you call a legislature, plui.dsred her treasury, levied exorbitant taxes and stole the public money. When nothing was left they issued bonds to the extent of forty millions of dollars. When the State was bankrupt they attempted to mortgage her future. These bonds were not the obligation of North Carolina, for they were not issued by a General Assembly that had been elected by the people. When the Democrats were restored to power all honorable obligations that had been incurred by the State were paid, and all of her debts were honorably settled. She repudiated these bonds for the people. North Carolina re pudiated them by an overwhelm airmont Departmen SAM DIME, Proprietor LET THIS BE THE Walter Wellman, the chap who ' pHaraEfflHaBHEMsraEaESS i IS was game to attempt id san,i i across the ocean in an airship, attributes the failure of his voy age to the equilibrator, a series of tanks . containing gasoline ; which floated in the water and! i were attached to the airship by a long rope. He said the day after he and his crew had been rescued that he first thought he could not get along without the equi libra toi, but that experience which resulted in abandonment of the America taught him that it was exactly the other way about, that he could not get along with the equilibrator. The next dav after Wellman made this statement the Baltimore Sun carried a cartoon that hit it off to a t-y. The Republican ele phant was the balloon, bound to make the White House or bust; President Taft was'seated in the airshi p and the Payne Aldrich tariff bill was the equili- brato,tDSsed in insurgency waves below. Neat, Wasn't it. The Republican thought they could not tret along without a tariff even higher than the Dingley tariff, so they passed the Payne Aldrich tariff law, giving special privileges to special interests and robbing the people; and now they find that it is going to be their undoing. President Taft is represented as saying, "Darn that equilibrator." It is a troub hsome thing that they cannot cut loose from and that is surely dragging them to the ground. t Store Cleanliness And Neatness Trumpeter 0F Good Tidings The State Fair In Good Hands News and Observer. The Scotchmen seem to have captured the State fair. For three years Capt. J. H. Currie, of Cumberland, has been presi dent, and now we are to have a "God-blessed Mac" in the per son of Col. E. F. McRae as pres ident. The Macs are all right and the fair continues in good hands. Thad. F. Tyler, 53 years old, a well-known contractor of Wil mington, died Friday night as the ing majority. Marion cuutr result of iniuries received Fridav was in the Senate of the Uniti d States as the representative or North Carolina. He conspired with the holders of these" bonds to force North Carolina to pay them. He conspired in secret and refused, upon his privilege as a lawyer, to tell what tran spired. While he was the ser vant, the agent, the Senator of North Carolina he attempted to foreclose this mortgage that had been put upon North Caro lina in reconstruction time and to consummate the villany of the men of that era. For more than forty years we have been taught to despise the men who attempt ed to perpetrate that great wrong upon North Carolina in the sixties. But Marion Butler to day is attempting to consummate the fraud and the robbery. ine Donas were issued in time of excitement when the greed of men was stimulated by the passions of - Civil War. The men who were the leaders of that crime were not native North Carolinians, but a man born in North Carolina, honored beyond his desert by her people when the passions of the war had been forgotten attempted to force his own btate to pay this repudiated debt. If the worst of the recon struction leaders could speak they would rejoice that at last their names might be takan down from the gibbet of history for their infamy is obscured by the black ness of his per j ury. North Caro lina, though torn and 'bleeding and splendid in her destitution aid her desolation, paid every dollar that she owed and cour ageously repudiated that which she did not owe. "She defied the robbers and the guilty holders of the fraudu lent bonds. While Marion Butler was the Senator of North Caro lina, and bound by every sacred obligation to guard her interest ana aeiena ner nonor, ne was hired by her enemies to assail the integrity of his native State, whose guardian he was, to up hold and consummate the crime which for forty years all good -- - 1- 1 1 Vn men nave conaemnea. it we execrate the men that issued the bonds what do we think of the man who for a share of the cor rupt money would force the pay ment of the bonds? This is the man who is now the leader of the Republican party." aiternoonin an auto accident near Wilmington. Mr. W. S. Bernard, owner and driver of the machine and business manager of The Morning Star, was pitched tirough the glass wind shield of the machine and only slightly injured. The machine skidded ii to a tree by the roadside. I tried doctors' medicine and had a rubber bandage for my leg, and bought everything that I heard Of, but they all did me no good, until at last I was persuaded to try Sloan's Liniment.
