Senate Spent More Than $2, 000,000 on itself Last Year, Washington Cor.. 19th. Ealtimore Sun. The United States Senate learned today officially the cost of maintaining itself in the past fiscal year. Tts nrice as an institution to the American DeoDle was $2,012, 374.52 for salaries, mileage and GENERAL NEWS ITEMS. Government experts are carry ing on extensive experiments with a view to making paper out of corn stalks and results so far obtained lead them to believe that before long a process will be perfected by which the stalks will displace woodpulp as the source of many grades of white paper. Besides there were bought for him a touring body for the car at 84S0, a mohair top at $.140, a wind shield fo: 840, and other items of initial expenditures bringing the aggregate outlay for the limousine up to $5,254.30. R.. charac terized the so-called war scare as ' 'silly, ' ' declaring that he neither saw any prospect of war nor had he any fear ot such a contin gency, but simply had advocated careful re-organization of the country's ''undeveloped military resources. Kerby, the young man who was dismissed from the Interior Department for disclosing the existence of the now famous "Lawler Memo randum," was paid $3 for his at tendance as a witness one day before the committee. Henry K. .Love, who was brought from Fairbanks, Alaska, to testify for blavis and Pinchot, cost the in vestigation 8531.40. His travel ing outlay from Fairbanks amounted to 8330.40, and he was allowed 8201 for 67 days' expense en route at $3 a day. There are a number of other witnesses who cost the Government more than $300 each. .exactly in lockers were in stalled a year ago today in the Senate. Men clearing land have been at work on the 230 acre tract Mr. McLean bought of Dr. Robinson and this is being prepared for farming as well as the 200 acre tract the convicts are to clear. The streets of Etown present an entirely changed appearance. fences have been set back, streets plowed and graded, the Tory hole in Main street filled up and a nice bannistered walk placed approaching the post office from the west. Betsy is boom ing and new life pervades the very air. We trust that the whole county will catch the fever and let's move up several pegs in the grand march of progress. Ihe crowning event in the preparation for this great for ward movement and the initial date for its real beginning is to be on January 14th, when the big celebration and lot sale in Etown is to take place.
