THE SEMI-WEEKLY ROBESONIAN. l . "Happy Jack," and he never I COMM E N T 1 I felt more like his name in all his I ' born days than he did on that 'UNDER THE AUSPICES." same Thursday at Orrum. That's ... , 0 'cause there were so many of This from the Greensboro Re- , ower Robeson's fair sex there. girls cord: "The last Legislature did one mighty good thing. Years ago any kind of a show, fake or otherwise, could come along, make a dicker with some so-called charity organization and give a show without paying any tax. Four years ago the Legislature passed an act cutting this kind of business out, but it was not clear and the last Legislature amended it or made it plain that in every case where any one re ceives the least pay a license tax must be paid. The Attorney General of the State was called on and has given an opinion that puts a quietus on the business. We talk about fakes, swindles and humbugs but as a general rule the concerns that come along and show for charity are arrant frauds. They fix it so they never get left, but quite often the or ganization gets it in the neck good and hard. Charity can give all the entertainments it pleases, but no one must be paid for doing the work. Like college baseball, it is a case where pro fessionals are barred. To which the Concord Times adds: "These shows always get the big end of the money, and the charitable organization takes what is left, if any. They always fix it so that the home organiza tion pays all expenses, including advertising. By doing this the show knows that the newspaper will be appealed to to give the ad vertising free because it is for a charitable object, don't you know, when all the time the greater part of it goes to benefit the traveling concern. This paper is at all times willing ana glad to help out anything given for the benefit oi home charit able institutions, but it respect fully declines to donate its space to traveling companies which are out for what money they can get out of it" It is quite a rare thing for the charitable organization to get anywhere enough to cover the expense incurred, yet the paper that looks at a venture of this kind before it is pulled off like the local organization that falls for it wishes, after the event, it had looked at it, is often censured as being unpatriotic. Nine times out of ten the effort expended in boosting the show or what-not that is going to walk off with almost all the receipts, sans doubt, would have much more satisfactory results if expended in raising money dry so. While the schools and colleges are preparing to close for the term, we wish to take a knock at the word "commencement." It has no sense in it, howsoever ex plained. Charlotte Observer. Good shooting. Thursday morning good and soon ;we find ourselves back at Orrum to hear one of the speakingest men ever. There was somewhere near 1,000 people present, all of whom seemed to be as happy as ing it missed a rare treat in the large crowd present seemed to j music line. The West Lumber ton bunday school was admitted to the institute. It was decided to make the meeting an all-day affair and take a little something along to make one feel better about twelve o'clock, in the fu ture, which we think is a wise There were some as pretty present as ever loved a boy. I saw one I liked, one I loved and last, but not least, one I wanted. The first thing after we gath ered at the auditorium of the school building-and it was packed to its extremity was the hterarv address by JJr. li. l. Vann. president of Meredith Collecre. Raleigh. He was intro duced bv Rev. A. B. Moore of Red Springs with some appro priate remarks. Dr. Vann, as many people know, has not got a single hand and has but one arm, but lust the same he- has got a head full of sense. He took the much-spoken-on subject of edu cation for his theme and said things on it that we never heard said before. Using a common expression, we have never heard it beat. After he was through we ad iourned for dinner. Talk about your good times, but right here we had it! After we had eaten too much and rested for an hour or more we reassembled in the auditorium. We thought to hear Rev. C. H. Durham preach the baccalaureate sermon, but be cause of some misunderstanding in the time, Mr. Durham failed to arrive. But Dr. Vann was still present and consented to preach; and preach he did. His iermon was one of the best. Af ter the sermon and a song and prayer the school sang "God be with you till we meet again" and Rev. A. B. Moore dismissed the audience with a short prayer. After we had gone on the yard we witnessed a good ball game between Orrum and Boardman. The result of the game was 8 to 3 in favor of Orrum. The Or rum team has not lost a game this season. Mr. Rivenbark came very near losing his camera. He was try ing to take the picture of three boys of one name and three girls of another all at one time and it's true as the truth that the thing fell over and broke itself. Now it was getting late by this time and the people began to leave on trains, autos, carts, buggies, wagons and "foot back." We hope to have the pleasure of attending another time as great as this one not one other, but many more. The teachers are to be congratulated for arranging such a program. Rev. I. P. Hedgpeth of Lum berton will preach at the Broad Ridge school house the first Sun day at 3 p. m. Mrs. J. J. Britt of Lumberton spent last week with relatives or. the "mount." Robeson county is blessed with plenty of good newspapers. Think I'd better start "The Mt. Eliam Lift-Up" or "The Sandy I Level Chronicle." One of our boys was attacked by a large ram while on his way to see his girl one day recently. He whipped the old fellow, and went on. It was the writer's pleasure to attend the Mt. These meetings are of great benefit to the schools and we hope the in stitute will continue to grow as it has for the last year, although it's well grown now. The rabbits continue to have a tough time on the "Mount" The boys killed 14 Saturday p. m. but there are plenty yet It's just once in a while that I go to see a girl and one don t cross the road ahead of me and give me bad luck. Your correspondent attended the union meeting at Orrum Saturday but has not got time to write anything about it, but will say it was one of the best we ever attended. The Latest Greatest and Up-to-Datest system of advertising adopted by the enterprising business manage ment of the well known establish ment of the Lumberton Drug Co. has certainly caused wide comment and considerable furore among the buying public of this section. When the Lumberton Drug Co. first announced that they would give away Absolutely Free the beautiful $400.00 Upton Parlor Grand Piano which is upon exhibition in their store, much curiosity was aroused as to HOW they could afford, from a business standpoint, to do such a thing, but when it was learned they would give ONE PIANO VOTE with every cent paid for any article in their store; also that the Piano was to be given absolutely Free to the person presenting the greatest num ber of these piano votes to them it looked like an extremely novel and most liberal advertising method. The earnestness with which our buy ing public have been "going after" these piano votes more than makes good our prophecy that it would be a "merry strife." This novel adver tising campaign, the ever increasing crowds, the many splendid values which they are offering daily has made their name a household name and a Mecca for the bargain lovers of this community. The Lumberton Drug Co. are to be congratulated upon the thoroughness of their busi ness foresight and the' citizens of Robeson county should feel that they have all reason to De proud of the f act of hiving sn establishment conducted upon such liberal and true business principles within our gates.
