2 THE SEMI-WEEKLY ROBESONIAN. THE TARIFF ON SUGAR. What it Cost the Country-An InTestisauon Which Vitally Interest all the People. Baltimore Sao. The investigation by a com mittee of the House of Repre sentatives into the Sugar Trust will brine: into the sunlight the most interesting of all tariff sub jects. According to the figures of the Government, each person in the United States, man, wom an and child, uses, on the aver acre, over 81 pounds of sugar each year. Multiply 81 by 5 and the amount consumed by the aver age family will be shown. The amount used by such a family is over 400 pounds a year. It is one of the necessaries of life, and the price of sugar concerns every citizen, and especially those of small means. The Gov ernment taxes all raw sugar im ported at the rate of about one cent a pound, and from that tax derives over $50,000,000 a year. This is the revenue tax. Upon top of that tax is put another cent per pound to protect the Sugar Trust from foreign compe tition. That extra cent per pound is collected, not by the Government, but by the sugar refiners. This is not all that Congress has done for the Sugar Trust. It has made the test of raw sugar such that all imported raw sugar must either pay the prohibitory tariff or go to the sugar refineries before it can be used. The Sugar Trust, for whose benefit the people of the United States must pay so enor i i mous a triDute, nas been con victed of cheating and defraud ing the Government by means of false weighing and perjury to the extent of many million dol lars. The company has now, af tr having paid its enormous dividends and $3,500,000 to the Government in settlement of its frauds, a surplus of $19,874 000 in its treasury. Mi the Congressional investiga tion on Wednesday a witness, who was formerly secretary of the company, was asked whether he believed that the removal of duties would decrease the price of sugar. The witness said he believed it would "in time." There is no doubt about it what ever. Under the law of 1864 the duty on sugar was from 3 to 5 cents per pound. In 1870 the tax on refined sugar was re duced from 5 cents to 4 cents, and the price of sugar went down 1 cent per pound. In 1883 the tax was reduced one-half cent per pound and the sugar declined one-half pound- In a speech delivered in the House of Representatives on May 5 Mr. Warburton, a Repub lican from the State of Washing ton, estimated that if sugar were on the free list the people here could buy it at $1.90 per 100 pounds less than it now costs them, or about as cheap as it sells in England. Last year the consumption in this country was 7,360,000.000 pounds. If Mr. Warburton's estimate is correct, then the tariff on sugar costs the people of the United States $139, 000,000 a year, and of this the Government gets $52,000,000 and the sugar men get $87,000,000. In opening up the sugar ques tion the House of Representa tives is engaging in an investiga tion which will vitally interest the people of the country. (Copyright !10, by Kcv. T. S. I.inicntt, P.P.) Isaiah's Prophecy Concerning- Sen nacherib. isa. xxxvii: 14-38. Golden Text God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Ps. xlvl:l. (1.) Verse 14. What letter was it that Hezeklah spread before the Lord? (2.) Is it the privilege of every man to spread all his letters, including those which give him trouble, before the AlmiKhty God, and if so, what is the advantage in doing it? (3.) What if ajiy advantage is there in telling our troubles to God in the house of the Lord, over doing so in our own homes? (4.) Verses 120 Hezeklah tells God in much detail the nature of his troubles. Now what good is it to do that, seeing God knows all about it in any event? (o.) Why does God not know all about our heartaches and our needs before we tell Him, in the same way as He knows afterward? (6.) What is the advantage of urg ing God by all the argument we can think of, as Hezekiah does here, to an swer our prayers? (7.) What effect does the degree of our vehemence, or the extent of our desire, have upon God in answering our prayers? (9.) Why did not God answer Heze klah direct, instead of through Is aiah? (10.) Apparently some men with equal goodness are bette able to re ceive detailed messages from God than others. If this is so, why is it? (11.) May we rest with absolute certainty in the assurance that hav ing told God our needs, He will sup ply them? Why? (12.) What is the reason for believ ing that no person and nothing can bring ultimate injury to a man, or a cause trusting in God? (13.) Why are men so foolish as to think they can prevail against God? (14.) Verse 29 Why does God take Injury done to His people as done against Himself (15.) Would you go so far as to say that every hurt by word or deed, done against a child of God, is done against God? Give your reasons. (16.) Give an example of how God restrains the wicked as stated here, "I will put my hook into thy nose, and my bridle in the lips.1' 17.) Verses 30-32 As an example of how God rules, and overrules, think of your own blessings, and say how many of them are a result of your own efforts and how many from causes over which you have had no control? (18.) Verses 33-37 What means did God take to prevent Sennacherib from capturing Jerusalem? (19.) How did the angels of the Lord slay probably 185,000 of the sol diers of the Assyrian army in one night? (Give some Bible examples of how such things have been done.) (20.) Verse 38. To what extent is it a rule that men get what they would like to give others and that "They who use the sword perish with the sword?"
