THE SEMI-WEEKLY ROBESONIAN I COMM ENT NOT POINTING "ANTES. And it was our opinion", re marks The Scottish Chief in ex plaining that it objects to the editor of this paper expressing an opinion about Robeson county public questions because we did not happen to sojourn in this neck of the woods back in the prehistoric period when folks familiarly called Treasurer M G. McKenzie "Gas," and because we inadvertently stated that the same Mr. "Gas" was a Lumber ton man. And it was our opinion," dopes out The Chief, .Vthat one should tarry by the walls of Eden until he gets his facts on straight beiore ne is qualified to point the way of antediluvians to the ark." So Facts that bear any relevancy to any question worth discussing are always on straight in this true chronicler of events and al bum of song. It will be recalled that on the question about which we ventured to express a modest opinion and which opinion The Chief thought was rendered in valid for the reason given above, the majority of the voters de cided against The Chief. But we are not concerned about' be ing "qualified to point the way of antediluvians to the ark." Bless you, no. We shall be satisfied if we can shed a little light upon the way to the ark of safety to live, thinking men, young men and old ' . . . men the workers, ever reaping something new, That which they bave done but earnest of the things (hat thev shall do." "To point the way of antedilu vians" no, we don't want to qualify for that task, for they belong to the class of whom Kip ling wrote "The lamp of their youth shall be ut terly out, But they shall subsist on the smell of it, And whatever they do they shall smack their lips And suck their gums and think well of i It Yes, they shall be perfectly pleased with their work, And that is.the perf ectest hell of it" The Robesonian isn't read by people who have reached that stage. The rayettevule Index an nounced in its issue last week that Mr. J. A. Parham has sold his interest in the paper to Mr Arley M. Moore, who comes from Durham, where he has been practicing law for eight years and will succeed Mr Farham as editor. We regret to learn this. Mr. Parham is a Robesonian and is a capital newspaper man. ne made the Index a mighty good paper. He has not made known his plans for the future. Dr. Harvey W. Wiley, pura fcod and drugs expert, who was born and reared a Republican, is supporting Gov. Wilson for Pres ident He will take the stump for Wilson about the first of next month and will attack Roosevelt for trying to claim credit for the enactment of the pure food and drugs act. He says that he will prove that Roosevelt not only re used to advocate the law but virtually destroyed it by an exe cutive order. To make health speeches, write health articles for news papers, visit the county homes and jails? These are merely the means to an end. It makes no difference to you about methods: what you want are results a re duction of your death rate. Keep .your eyes on the end; forget the methods; that is the health of ficer's business; it is yours to see that he reduces the death rate. Health work either favorably in fluences death rates or is worse than worthless. North Carolina State Board of Health Bulletin. Unless vital statistics are kept no county or town can tell wheth er its healthfulness, something that all counties and towns like to boast about, is really better or worse than the average. Can Robeson county's superintendent of health tell what has been the death rate in the county during his period of incumbency? Can Lumberton's town physician, who has held the office for sever al years, tell what the statistics are for Lumberton during the past year. Col. Bryan "done noble" at the Baltimore convention and we think more of him for his con duct there than we ever before thought of him, but he is subject to error, like the rest of us, and he certainly has another guess coming when he puts Senator Simmons in a class that is not progressive enough. There are quite a few of us in North Caro lina who believe that Senator Simmons' brand of democracy has been truer and saner and sounder and safer to tie to, first and last, than the brilliant Ne braskan's own. Even the great Col. "Bryan " la i sometimes mis taken in his estimate of men and measures. Bellamy Briefs. OorretDondenca of The Robesonian.
