THE ROBESONIAN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1914 PACE FOUR y-y tt vr TEE ROBESONIAN Published MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS By ROBESONIAN PUBLISHING CO J. A. SHARPE President SUBSCRIPTION RATES One Year Six Months 75 Three Months THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1914. FORTY-FOUR YEARS OLD. The Robesonian with this issue en ters upon its fortyfifth volume. The paper was established in 1870 by W. S. McDiarmid, the first issue being published in February. Mr. McDiar mid was drowned in Lumber river near Lumberton in 1873 and his bro ther W. W. McDiarmid conducted the paper until his death in 1897, From that time until July, 1907, the paper changed editors a number of times. Since the summer of 1907, for nearly seven years, the paper has been un- j der the present management. j The RobesonianJs one of the Oldest j papers in the State. Forty-four years j is a long life for a North Carolina newspaper, and many changes have taken place since The Robesonian was , established. The paper began its ! career on what is now known as Wa. j ter street, down almost on the bank of Lumber river, about midway be- j tween Third and Fourth streets. A j Washington hand press was used to ; print it for many years; and it was, for many years a weekly paper. It is now published within a stone's j throw of its first office, is printed on , a modern press, and a linotype ma-; chine took the place of hand compo sition more than a year ago. i Even during the time the present management has had charge of the : paper, not quite seven years, many changes have taken place in Robeson ; county and Lumberton. The county has built here since then, at a eost of about $75,000, one of the hand Bomest and most conveniently ar. , ranged court houses in the State, re- placing an old and very inferior build ing; now Lumberton has as large a number of fine residences as can be found in any town of the same size, while then there were only one or' two pretentious residences; now the ' town has paved sidewalks, its princi pal business street is paved in the business section, and other streets j and sidewalks are to be paved right j away, while then there were only a few blocks of sidewalks paved and during rainy shells the streets were almost impassable. A new railroad has been built from Lumberton to Hope Mills, the Virginia & Carolina Southern Railway, and the number of other improvements that have been made is so large that it would take many columns of The Robesonian to tell about them all in detail. The Robesonian has on its list some subscribers who started with the first issue in 1870 and have not missed an issue. It is glad to be able to say that its list of subscribers is large and steadily growing all the while. Whatever might be said of the pa per under former editors, the present editor knows that mistakes have been made since the paper has been under, his direction; but he is glad to be able , to say that whatever mistakes have been made have been mistakes of judgment and that he has tried to hold the paper true to lofty ideals and -to speak the truth as it has been given him to see the truth without fear or favor. The paper will make mis- j takes in the future, but it hopes to give better service than it has given j in the past. j o It is a curious fact that while free ! delivery of mair in Lumberton will i not benefit The Robesonian at all the j paper cannot wait for the carriers j . to deliver mail to it it will be taxed j on account of the establishment of ' free delivery The Robesonian and j every other paper in the county that j has subscribers served by the post office here. Every paper is admitted free to the mails in its home county except at offices which have free .mail delivery, and at such offices papers are subject to postage at the rate of one cent a pound. That means that while The Robesonian and other coun ty papeft 'hav"not had to pay post age on papers sent to subscribers served by the Lumberton postoffice Catarrh Cannot Bs Cured with LOCAt, APPLICATIONS.
