Pinkham's Vegetable Com pound, and it is true. We are permitted to publish in this announcement extracts from the letters of five women. All have been recently received unsolicited. Could any evidence be more convincing? IIIodgdon, He. 44 1 had pains in both sides Mid such a soreness I could scarcely straighten up at times. My back ached and I tos so nervous I could not sleep, and I thought I never would be any better until I submitted to an operation, but I commenced taking Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and soon felt like anew woman." Mi's. IIayavakd Sowkes, Ilodgdon, Me. 2 Charlotte, N. C. M I was in bad health for two years, with pains in both sides and was very nervous. I had a growth which the doctor said was a tumor, and I never would get well unless I had an operation. A friend advised me to take Lydia E. Pink ham's Vegetable Compound, and I gladly say that I am now enjoying fine health." Mrs. Rosa. Sims, 10 WinoflS St.,Charlotte, N. C. 3 Hanover, Pa." The doctor advised a severe operation, but my husband got me Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and I experienced great relief in a short time. Kow I feel like a new person and can do a hard day's work and not mind it." Mrs. Ada Wilt, 196 Stock St., Hanover, Pa. 4 Decatur, III. "I was sick in bed and three of the best physi- cians said I would have to be taken to the hospital for an oper ation as I had something growing in my left side. I refused to sub mit to the operation and took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com pound and it worked a miracle in my case, and I tell other women what it has done for me." Mrs. Lauba. A. Griswold, 2300 Blk. East William Street, Decatur, ILL Cleveland. Onio. "I was verv irregular and for several years my side pained me so that I expected to have to undergo an op eration. Doctors said they Knew ot nothing that would help me. I took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vege table Compound and I became regular and free from pain. I am thankful for such a good medi cine and will always give it the highest praise." Mrs. C. II. Griffith, 7305 Madison Av., Cleveland, O. ! 3Write to LYDIA E.PINKIIAM MEDICINE CO. The shades of night were falling fast, As through a Tar Heel village passed A "youth" who bore the strange de- ;vice "Simmons!" : His brow was sad; his eyes beneath. Flashed like a falchion from its sheath, '.'And like a silver clarion rung, iThe accents of that bitter tongue "Simmons!" In happy homes he saw the light . Of faith in Simmons shine clear and bright Alas! his "star" but dimly shone !And from his lips escaped a groan, "Simmons!" t ; "Try not that path" the people said, '"Dark lowers the tempest overhead, !You cannot stem this rising tide," ! And loud that clarion voice replied, I "Simmons!" j ; "Oh stay," Democracy said, "and rest jThy weary head upon this breast." A tear stood in his boyish eye, -, But still he answered with a sigh "Simmons!" An editor by a "Gum-shoe" found Half-burried in the snow, lay drowned Still grasping in his hand of ice, The banner with the strange device, "Simmons!" Now fades that struggle fast away, Still floats that banner day by day, And from that town serene tho'near A voice still falls as a falling tear, . "Simmons!" R. F. D. (With apologies to Longfellow. Colds and Croup in Children. Many people rely upon Chamber Iain's Cough Remedy implicitly in cases of colds and croup, and it never disappoints them. Mrs. E. H. There is aparently only one qualification if he wants it Mr. McLean is. practically a member of the National Democratic Committee, j filling the place of Secretary of the i Navy Daniels. If he should prefer to serve the party as State chairman, that place will-be tendered him. A very capable Charlotte man has been mentioned for the chairmanship of this committee but it is a question if he could spare the time from his ( business and the absence in Raleigh bvhich would be the inevitable requi sition. Both as a matter of succession and by right of rotation, the eastern por tion of the State is entitled to the chairmanship of the State Democratic Executive Committee at this time. Al though the campaign this year, while being far more important than is gen erally considered, will not be so im portant as the campaign two years from now when a President end a ncv Congress are to be chosen. However sectionalism as to party management in North Carolina does not amount to much, since the main purpose is to secure an able and capable chairman, regardless of the portion of the State in which he resides. State Chairman Webb, of Asheville, having been appointed U. S. marshal for the Western district of the Fed eral Court, will resign the State chair manship, whereupon the State Com mittee will soon have to select his suc cessor. An eastern North Carolina man is in the line of succession, and as he has for years been prominent in party councils and has been closely identified with the State organization, there can be little doubt that he will be given the refusal of the State '. chairmanship. That man is the Hon. i A. W. McLean of Lumberton, but the Lumberton Robesonian, while urging : his claims, says it is not known whether Mr. McLean would accept or not. The Charlotte" Observer states that at the proper time it will probably develop that Mr. McLean is in line of sucession to succeed Mr. Webb, or that he can get it if he desires the honor, and that "there is only one qualification if he wants it." The Observer adds: J "Mr. McLean is practically a mem ber of the National Democratic Com mittee, filling the place of Secretary of the Navy Daniels. If he should prefer to serve the party , as State chairman, that place will be tendered him. A very capable Charlotte man has been mentioned for the chairman ship of this committee, But it is a question if he could spare the time i from his business and the absence in Raleigh, which would be the inevita- ble requision. The post carries with it more of time devoted to the cause ' of the party than it does of mere ; honor, and the man who accepts it will do so with a full understanding of the sacrifice involved." Nevertheless, the State chairman ship often brings more than hard work, self sacrifice and honor. It brought a marshalship fa State Chair man Webb, or at any rate, It empha sized his ability and proved his fidel ity and usefulness to the party. Thus making him eligible to the marshal ship. Mr. McLean is the kind of man to make a good State chairman. He i has all the qualifications, even to the I alertness necessary to meet all emer fgencies that" might "arise-irfa ca m i paign, in even an "off year." The Star would be glad to see the East have the State chairman, and I while Mr. McLean already, has given many years of valuable service to the j party, we have no doubt the Demo ! cratic leaders in the East would like I to see him further honored and bur ; dened, if that is what it amounts to.
