Fierce fightiug between the Allies and the Germans continues in tli2 western theatre of war, especially in teh district near the North Sea coa ;t in Belgium, around Nieuport, anil (southeasterly toward the river Lys. The Germans claim they have thrown additional forces westward across the Yser, between Nieuport and Dixmunde ajid have advanced at several oints northeast of Ypres and taken over 500 British prisoners, a number of them officers,, The latest French reports admit that the Germans have crossed the Yser, but goes no further. No definite result has been attained in either of these zones. The Austrians have driven the Mon tenegrins from positions on the Bos nian frontier. Geeral Sir-Charles Whittingham Horseley Douglas, chief of the BritiV' general staff, died today in London. The German Major General Pochha mer has been killed in action in th Argonn forest' American cotton shipments will not be considered contraband of war. Great Britain has notified the United ing rural policamen, and in favor of reducing the salaries of all other offices. A motion to abolish the office of county treasurer resulted in a ti; vote, Chairman McNeill breaking the tie by voting to retain the office with the understanding that reduction of salary to $1,200 would he recommend ed. The sheriff alone escaped. The memorial as originally drafted de clared in favor of reducing the salary of the sheriff to $2,000 and allowing him and his deputies, fees, as for merly, but this was not adopted and no this office. Also a declaration in fa vor of abolishing the office of coun ty auditor or combining it with some other office and restoring the office of county finance committee was strick en out. These recommendations of the jus tices are, of course, only recommen dations. According to their measure of how faithfully the "5 or 36 men who adopted them reflect the senti ment of the poeple in their several communities, no doubt, will the Sena tor and Representatives from Robe son in the next Legislature give them weight. Justice A. P. Ovldwell of Lumber. In announcing abandoment of their filibuster for cotton legislation after a conference with other Southern Senators and Representatives, Sen ator Smith of Georgia and Represen tative Henry of Texas said it was apparent no quorum could be pro cured and further obstructive tactics might injure chances of ultimate suc cess. Johnson, colored, was burned across the river , in Brooklyn, Friday night about 11 o'clock. The family were sleeping in the house, and say the fire had gain ed good headway from a chimney when they were aroused. The loss is said to be $1,000 with $500 insur ance. The alarm was not turned in to the fire station. No New Cases of Scarlet Fever. County Physician B. W. Page in forms The Robesonian that no new cases of scarlet fever have developed in town since the three reported i;i Thursday's Robesonian. At a meeting held in the office of County Superintendent of Schools Poole Saturday a committee of two for each school district in the county was appointed for Community Ser vice Days, which will be observed throughout the State December 3, 4 and 5. The names of those appoint ed will be published in Thursday's Robesonian. A friend was present and offered his assistance so far as swearing to her age was concerned, but it looked for a tiie like their an ticipations had been nipped in the bud.
