Miss MacNeill will teach near Lum
berton this year. Miss Katie Groves
Northrop, and grandmother, Mrs.
Rich, are in Atlanta. They were to
be gone 10 days or more. Miss. Mary
McLean of Red Springs was in town
Sunday. Miss McLean began her
school work at Rozier's Monday.
Dr. T. L. Northrop, we are sorry
to learn, has had to give up practice
again on account of his health.
The meeting at Baptist church here
closed last week with 10 additions.
The baptizing took place at Qdum's
pond Sunday afternoon.
Mr. John Stuart Butler of this town
and Miss Annie Jones of King Hiram
were united in marriage last Monday
week evening at the home of the
'ride's father, Mr. Herman Jones;
Mrs. Butler is well known in this sec
tion as she has been a member of the
graded school faculty here for the
nast 2 years and has a host of
friends who wish her and her "new
ly wed" much happiness. Mr. But.
ler is one of our town's young at
torneys and has made many friends
since-coming here.
Mrs. Maggie McEachern is spend
ing this week at Mr. Monroe's, near
Lumber Bridge.
Mr. Neill McNeill has returned
home from Highsmith's hospital, Fay
etteviUe, and seems to be much im
proved. Mr. McNeill was seriously
hurt in an auto accident a few weeks
ago and had a "close call".

R. McEachern attended the Synod
last week.

father's home, Mr. F. Edwards, who
lives just out of town, and were hur
ried at 3:30 "in the Parkton cemetery.
We extend sympathy to the bereaved
family in this sad affliction. Little
Dannie was an exceptionally fine and
bright boy three years old and was
very, much attached to his grand-parents
with whom he had made his
home most of his life. Mr. and Mrs.
John McDonald, the former twin
brother of Mr. Dan McDonald, also
of Rocky Mount, attended the fun
eral. Messrs. Neill .McNeill, J. C. D.
McNatt and P. H. Fisher visited
Lumberton today.

additional news that twenty-five out
of 67 counties in the State had car
ried for suffrage, gave its support
ers great encouragement.
Although suffrage was defeated in
New York, more than 500,000 votes
were cast for it. The majority
against was about 175,000.
In Massachusetts woman suffrage
was defeated by a majority of 132,
083, the ote . being 163,400" for and
295,489 against.
In Ohio, State-wide prohibition was
idefeated by a majority estimated on
almost complete returns from 30,
000 to 40,000.
Other results of the State elections
were:
Massachusetts Samuel W. McCall,
Republican, defeated David I. Walsh,
Democrat, for Governor by a plur
ality of 6,606. Republicans gained
one in the Senate and 16 in the
House, both of which they control.
Maryland Emerson C. . Harrison,
Democrat, defeated Ovington E. Wel
ler, Republican, for Governor by a
plurality of 3,504. Democrats re
tained control of both houses of the
State Assembly.
Kentucky Nearly complete re
turns gave A. O. Stanley, Demo
crat, a majority of 7,769 over Edwin
P. Morrow, Republican, for Govern
nor.
New York Republicans elected
William S. Bennett to Congress from
a Democratic district, the 23rd, and
also elected 98 of the 150 assem
blymen. ' Njw Jersey Republicans record
ed general legislative gains, which
will give them control of the State
Assembly on joint ballot.
Virginia Fushionism in Norfolk
county was defeated By straight. out
Democrats and Republicans added
three or four representatives to the
House from the only Republican dis
