First Baptist Raises Pastor's Salary

Rev. V. R. Gas ton Resigns as Pas
tor at Antioch

Rev. V. R. Gaston, who for the
past several years has been . pastor
of Antioch Presbyterian church, an
nounced to his congregation last
Sunday that he would offer his resig
nation as pastor of this church at
the. next appointment. His friends
here as well as at Antioch are sorry
to Jose Mr. Gaston. He is a schol
arly preacher, a1 good pastor and a
polished Christian r gentleman, whose
place will be hard to fill. It is
learned Mr" Gaston has accepted a
call to the Presbyterian church at
Aberdeen and will also serve Wag
ram. . His friends here will follow
him and his family with their best
wishes as they go hence. .

tor Friday. Mr. Townsend says that
Rev. A. T. Howell of Hamlet has
accepted a call to pastor Ten Mile.i

have been without a pastor for some
time.

An interesting program was car
ried out by the B. Y. P. U. at the
First Baptist church last Monday eve
ning. Miss Fodie Townsend was group
leader. The subject for the evening
was Matt. 7. Splendid talks were
made by Messrs. B. M. Sibley and

county merchant, was killed by light

Friday night His wife and three
children also were shocked, but not
seriously injured. The bolt struck
the chimney and passed down through

ceremony and used the impressive
ring service.
The church was attractively dec
orated in green and white - with
touches of lavender and yellow. The
back and sides of the pulpit were
latticed in white with vines trailing
over them. A large hoop with lav
ender ribbons and yellow hearts was
suspended from the ceiling under
which the bride and groom stood.
Mr. J . A . Johnson very impres
sively sang "To Know You Are
Faithful," followed with the "Bri
dal Chorus", from the "Rose Maid
en' sung by 14 young ladies dress
ed in pure white. Miss Laurane Joy
ner played the accompaniments . to
both of these selections.. Then with
Misr Pearl-Cobb at the iiiano, to the
strains of wedding march from
Lohengrin the bridal party entered
in the following, order: Ushers,
Messrs. Hallie Seawell and G. R.
Thagard, Carl Fletcher end Robert
Lancaster; the bridesmaids, Miss
Josephine Evans and Miss Lattie
Rhodes" and the dames, Mesdames J.
C. Lentz, Ed McNair, Dan Mariey
and Dr. T. H. Olive. Then came
little Ed Thaggard and Laura North
rop, dressed in white, carrying a
lavender and a yellow pillow which
they, placed for the bride and green
to kneel upon. Next' came the ring
bearer, Surles Lewis, carrying the
ring on a silver tray, followed by
the maid of honor, Miss Cjyde Mc
Nair.' Next came the bride in a love
ly creation, of white taffeta and , Ge-orgette'-erepe
with veil en trail) and
carrying a shower bouquet of bride
roses and lilies of the valley who en
tered on the arm of her father who
was met at the altar by the groom
and his best man, Prof. F W. Orr
of Charlotte. n r
"To- Wild Rose," was played dur
ing the ceremony and Mendelssohn's
wedding march as a recessional. The
maids of honor wore a large lace
hat with a yellow bow, a lingerie
dress with yellow girdle and carried
white carnations tied with yellow
tulle. One-half the bridesmaids and
dames wore lavender flowered lawns,
lace hats with lavender bows and
carried -white carnations tied with
tulle, while the others wore yellow
flowered lawns, lace hats with yellow
bows and carried white carnations,
tied with yellow tulle.
The bride is an attractive young
woman and has the past three years
been the efficient teacher of music
in the Cherryville graded school. The
groom is a prominent young den
tist at Cherryville. Dr. and Mrs;
Holt amid showers of rice left on
the 11 o'clock train for Burlington,
where they will visit Dr. Holt's par
ents,, after which they will be at
home at Cherryville.

and Mrs. D. B. Lancaster entertain
ed the bridal party and a few other

ed and in cutting the bride's cake
Miss Ethel DuRant won out the ring.

Miss Berta Butler the thimble.
The young ladies in the bridal cho
rus gave Miss Lancaster a hand
some linejj shower at the home of
Miss Lattie Rhodes, Miss Rhodes,
Miss Josephine Evans and Mrs. J .
C. Lentz greeted the guests as they
arrived and seated them on the vine
covered porch. Hand-painted book
lets containing a floral wedding con
test were distributed and each guest
at once became busy, Mrs. J.B.Evans
won the prize, a "White House"
cook book and in a very graceful
manner presented it to Miss Lancas
ter. -
Miss Lancaster was then invited to
the side porch where an immense
yellow rose covered "bell," with lav
ender ribbon was suspended. Miss
Mary McLane "rang" the bell and a
beautiful shower of linen came forth.
Lavender and yellow cream and cake
were served.
