W" It m m m I ran into Hands of Some Euro pean Tower Population Only 33, vvv Washinatnn ricr!t-h Au A Purchase by the United States of wie islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, lying to the ast of Porto Rico and comprising an archi pelago known as the Danish West Indies, is provided for in a treaty Bisrneo louav Dv me United State and Denmark. It will be submitted at once to the United States Sen ate and the Danish Parliament whose ratifications are necessarv to com plete the purchase agreement. No serious opDOsitioa is expected in the Senate, where action will be sought a. the present session. Mem bers of the Foreign Relations com mittee are understood to be virtual ly unanimous in their approval of the treaty. Senator Lodee. the rank ing Republican member, issued" a statement tonight declaring the ar guments in favor of acquisition of the island are unanswerable. The only objection is expected to come from Senators who believe the pur- cnase price of $25,000,000 too great. ihe outcome in the Danish par liament is more uncertain, although the expectation here is that the treaty will be accepted. European powers which have wanted possession of the islands for military reasons are not expected to look with favor on purposed sale to the United States and they may bring strone pressure to bear at Copenhagen. It is recall ed that failure of a similar purchase treaty in the Danish parliament years ago was attributed to German influence. Details of the fact will not be made public until it is transmitted to the Senate, at least. It is under stood to provide, however, for com plete acquisition of the islands, but to stipulate that Danish business in terests there shall be guaranteed pro tection. A clause also is included ceding to Denmark the undefined American rights of discovery in Greenland, a Danish possession. Senator Lodge emphasized in his statement tonight the possibility that the islands, if not acquired by the United States, miirht fall ' into the hand3 of some European power and involve this government in difficul ties under the Monroe Doctrine "which might easily lead to war" a consideration which, it is under stood has been prominently before the eyes of officials here in their negotiations for the purchase. The population is only 33,000, of whom nearly 30,000 are negroes," said Senator Lodge, "There is no possibility of any ma terial increase in population and an nexation would never involve at any time the troubksome question of statehood. "The Danish islands could be read ily defended from attack, occupy a commanding strategic position and are of incalculable value to the United States."
