Prof. W. H. Cale Elected to Suc ceed Prof. R. E. Sentelle as Super intendent of Lumberton Schools Prof. Sentelle Resigned Has Been Elected Superintendentent of Pub lic Instruction in Edgecombe County Other Teachers Elected. At a meeting of the board of grad ed school trustees Thursday evening Prof. W. H. Cale was elected superin tendent of the Lumberton schools at a salary of $1,500 the year plus what may be secured trom outside pupils up to $25 the month. Prof. Cale- is a graduate of Wake Forest college of the class of 1911 and graduated from Columbia University in 1915. He comes to Lumberton from Henderson having been superintendent of the Henderson schools last year. Pro. R. E. Sentelle was re-elected as superintendent of the Lumberton schools at a recent meeting of the board, but resigned. Prof. Sentelle having been superintendent of the public instruction in Edgecombe county. Miss Kate McDaniei of Kinston was elected principal of the high school at a salary of $75 the month. Other teachers elected at the meet ing of the board Thursday evening were: First grade Miss Lillian Nance of Lumberton, salary $60; eighth grade Miss Anna L. Olds of New Bern, salary $60; ninth grade Miss Kate Stanley of Guilford College sal ary $60. W. J. McLean , colored, was re elected principal of the colored grad ed school at a salary of $50 the month. Lula Hooper was elected as teacher in the same school at a salary of $40 the month. It was ordered that board borrow $2,000 to pay outstanding vouchers. Messrs. Q. T. Williams and C. V. Brown, members of the board, were appainted as a committee to arrange for a domestic science class during the next term of school. Sugar Equalization Board Creat ed by Wilson. To equalize the price of sugar to the consumer in the face of pros nects for an increase due to a threat ened shortage and to secure better distribution. President Wilson has created the sugar equalization board on recommendation of Food Admin istrator Hoover. The board will be incorporated at $5,000,000, the capital to be furnished by the President by his special war fund and will have authority to ac quire even at a loss to the government the production of best sugar facto ries that cannot under the present price of beets be sold to the public at a reasonable price, and other hio-h cost suear. This will be resold in the common lot at the stabalizsd price, thus saving censiderable to the consumer. Tyson, charged with store breaking was begun Saturday and court will adjourn as soon as this case is completed. Tyson is being tried on the charge of breaking into a store at St. Pauls several months ago. The following cases have oeen cleared off the docket: Pink Woods, Indian, manufacturing liquor; two years and six months in State prison. Woods gave notice of appeal to the Supreme court. Joe Ross, colored, found guilty of manslaughter; sent to county roads for a term not to exceed four years and 11 months and not less than one year. Geo. Burroughs, colored, perjury; 12 months on roads. Bradley Jacobs, larceny; judgment suspended upon payment of cost. Ed. Clifton, laifceny; prayer for judgment continued upon payment ;f the cost. Jim McLaurin, colored, rape; 12 months on the roads. J. H. and J. D. McRainey and Sam Pugh, enticing servants; judgment suspended upon payment of the cost. Mullen Smith, attempt to rape; not guilty. Smith is the negro arrested several months ago on the charge of attempting to rape a white girl who was attacked on a street in Maxton. J. W. McQueen, cheating; nol prossed. Moffitt of Whiteville is spending awhile here. We are glad to have her. We learn that she is thinking of returning this week. Mrs. J. C. TOBACCO PRICES SOARING. Prices on the Lumberton tobacco market continue to soar. Prices Fri day and today were the highest of the season. Owing to the dry weath er tobacco growers are having trouble in getting their tobacco in the proper order for sale, but much tobacco is coming in every day. Recorder's Court. The following cases have been dis posed of by Recorder E. M. Britt: Willie Davis, larceny of wood; pray er for judgment continued upon pay ment of the cost. J. THE RECORD OF DEATHS- Alleged Deserter Arrested. Joe Pittman, Indian, was arrested Saturday by Rural Policeman A. H. Prevatt on the charge of failure to answer the call of the exemption board in Hoke county. He was plac ed in jail here. It is alleged that Pittman left Hoke soon after he reg istered and failed to notify the au thorities of his whereabouts. He Traveled Many Miles. Mrs. Laura Richter of R. 5 from Lumberton and Mr. Samuel Mackey of Iowa were married in the offiC3 of Register of Deds M. W. Floyd Fri day morning. Justice M. G. McKen zie officiated. Mary Elizabeth, 13-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Stames, died Thursday evening at 8:25 o'clock at their Home on rast Third street. The child had been des perately ill since last Sunday. McKinnon of Maxton were among the 8 delegates to the annual conference elected from the district. The district conference will be held next year at Maxton. Vacation During August. At a meeting last week the board of stewards of Chestnut Street Meth- ! odist church voted to give the pastor, Rev. Dr. R. C.
