R. 2.). Oct 24 -We have been having some perfect weather for some time now and the farmers have been very busy gather ing their cotton, peas and hay, and now it is potato digging time and we hope that this harvest may prove to be great. It look as though we might nave a rain this afternoon, which we would all be very glad to see, for it has been awful dry through this section for some time now. We hear that influenza is still rae ing through the entire country but we hope that it will soon be stopped There has been several cases in this community. Misses Jennie and Be- American Gun That Beats Freak German Long-Range Can non Now in Use on West Front. American 16-inch guns manned by American blue jackets co-operating with the French, began firing upon German railroad centers back of the Serre-Olse front last Wednesday. The Americans directed their shells a- gainst railroad supply stations and junctions in the region of Vervins and also in the vicinity of Rosoy. These naval guns, which nave been in operation since Sept. 14, originally were intended for new battle cruisers. They are said to throw a heavier pro jectile and have a greater muzzle ve locity than any weapon ever placed on a mobile land mounting. The weight of the explosive used with each projectile is many times greater than that used in the freak German long-range gun, and in point of de structiveness they are incomparable. The organization for one gun requires an entire train; one car is a complete machine ship. The gun has shown ac ever before possible with guns of curacy of fire at longer range than such great calibre. WITH AUNT SOPHIA Correspondence of The Robesonian. Lumberton, R. 6, Oct. 11. Farmers are busy picking cotton and peas, dry and green peas to can. Late corn is nearly ready to can, too. Red jersey pigs will sell like hot cakes. We sold $48 worth one morning last wees. People come night and day to buy pigs. Rev. L. E. Dailey filled his regular appointment at Raft Swamp Saturday and Sunday last. He preached a pow erful sermon on Saturday from the subject of "The evil influence of hesi tating excuses." Mrs. Baucom is president of our missionary seciety and we are always o-lari to he?r from her sister isell, Mrs. Neill Johnson. They have moved form Japan to China. We had read in "The Way of Faith" about the ereat evangelist Mc Lendon and were very glad to hear of him comine to your town, near enouerh for us to attend the meeting, but were disappointed on Sunday morning to find an epidemic of in fluenza there, instead of a revival. We extend sympathy to our niece Mrs. Williams in her sad bereave ment. Also Mrs. S. S. Stephens and her step-mother Mrs. Fannie Page.! May the Lord heal the afflicted people and stop this plague and send the evangelist with messages from heaven to deliver that will be like seed sown in good soil that will bring forth an hundred fold of fruit. We had a special prayer meeting at 4 o'clock Sunday p. m. for the sol dier boys. Bro. Dailey read Psalms 103 and talked from the 4th verse. We never forget the soldier boys and are always glad to read a letter from them. The news of Huns having our nephew Ellis in prison was sad. Let u pray for the Lord to deliver the soldiers from those cruel beastly Huns like he released Peter when he was chained between two soldiers. AUNT SOPHIA. . L. H. Caldwell SPANISH INFLUENZA STRIKES SUDDENLY Pneumonia Often Results Vic tims Seized Without Warning, Making Precaution Doubly Necessary. Much of the difficulty experienced by health authoities in checking the spread of the Spanish influenza lies in the fact that it strikes its victim without warning. Although State and Federal au thorities are taking every possible precaution in- their effort to stop the spread of the epidemic, the disease in many sections of the country has gotten entirely beyond control and is claiming its victims by the thousands. It is universally agreed by all well informed persons that the surest pre ventative is to get the system in the best possible physical condition in or der to be able to throw off the in fection. As has been previously stat ed it is possible to perfect the powers of resistance of the human system so that it can throw off almost any in fection, not excepting Spanish Influ enza, which is one of the most conta gious diseases known. Medical authorities agree that peo ple who are weak and run-down are the earliest victims of the Influenza epidemic. If you find yourself weak or losing flesh, or if you are in a generally run-down condition, you are really in great danger if you should come in contact with the Influenza germ. From those lonely graves without a name Has righteous anger burst to flame ? To the last dregs they drained the cup, But we have caught their standard up, And we will bear it on to where High victory is, and plant it there. "They shall not pass!" Nor yet have they Your hearts and bodies blocked the way. We flung on yours our own, afire, To drive the Hun back to his lair We've made your holy cause our own, Freedom still reigns upon her throne, And ne'er will take a backward glance, While poppies guard those graves in France.
