SOLDIERS' LETTERS
Corporal Baxley Writes Ala "Uncle
Walt."
To the Editor of The Robesonian:
Sitting on my bunk feeling blue.
Thinking of tie ays gone by, 'tis
true, two fr.cvids and myself with the
"blues" r. ha jpened to be. stationed
in a billet t.:at numbers twenty-three
we have a cozy corner; as cozy as
can be with no earthly inhabitants
except the "cooties" and they go sim
ply wild over me.
Now for the eats, let's see. For
breakfast we have slum and stew,
coffee and cream, very nice, 'tis true.
For dinner we have stew and slum,
rice that was cooked but not cooked
done. For supper we have "corn
Willie hash," potatoes that were cook
ed but never mashed.
Supper over; we go to bed, there
to rest our weary heads. Our beds
j?rc like a book of law, very unpleas
ant as they are made of straw. On
these beds, these beds of hay, rest
less hours are passed away.
At night when the sun has ceased
to shine and our candles we have lit,
we say to each other, "We are doing
our bit." Now my dear reader, if you
only could see these terrible wails
that surround we three! These walls
are of rock, tattered and torn, the
pictures on the wall, nude and worn;
the open fire place, broad and wide;
the cobble-stone floor and no seats
inside.
Well, I will stop and dream of the
"life of my heart," across the sea.
Yes, I will stop before I tell that be
ing in France is learning me well.
Now. in silence, I want to see the
grand old statue of Liberty and with
patience, I'll wait all alone for the
good old ship to carry me home.
When I get home and get off these
pants, it's good-bye army and the
same to France. There was lots of
drills and hiking but our dreams all
came true and we have showed thj
Kai3er what Americans could do.
Now as I must go to bed and sleep,
I will dream of going home and of
tailing to some one that can com
prec' . As I close for this time. I
want to say that I would be glad to
near from any Robesonian reader.
I am expecting to be homo soon
Best wishes to The Robesonian.

Commemorate Now Also Liberation
of the World.
President Wilson cabled the fol
lowing Memorial day .message to the
American people:
"My Fellow Countrymen:
"Memorial day wears this year an
added significance and I wish if only
by a message, to take part with you
in its observation and in expressing
the sentiments which it inevitably
suggests. I observing the day we
commemorate not' only the reunion
of our own county but also now the
liberation of the world from one of
the mst serius dangers to which free
government and the free life of men
were ever exposd. We buried the
gailant and now immortal men who
died in this great war of liberation
with a new sense of consecration.
Our thoughts and purposes now are
consecrated to the maintenance of
the liberty of the world and of the
union of its people in a single com
radeship of liberty offfered their
lives. They came to the field of bat
tle with the high spirit and pure
heart of crusaders. We must never
forget the duty that their sacrifices
has laid upon us of fulfilling their
hopes and their purposes tothe ut
most. This, it seems to me, is the
impressive lesson and the inspiring
mandate of the day.
