C Robeson's selectmen are of this di vision. They wrought nobly find well. They went through the hell of it for a season and earned their name. The Germans didn't like them a bit The Wildcats ate Germans alive. They made themselves mighty unpopular with the Boches and mighty popular with everybody else. Bless their wild hearts, we snan wel come them home heartily. "Now let the wortd go burn-," Until the Wildcats are welcomed home Robeson county folks and the balance of the folks in North Caro lina don't care whether school keeps or not. LUMBERTON ROAD MEET. Lumberton was selected as the place for the next meeting of the Wilmington-CharlotteAsheville High way association at the meeting held at Monroe last Thursday. The meet ing will be held here some time next KEEP THE DOLLARS GROWING. The following is sent out by the War Loan organization of Richmond: The Government's plan for mak ing interest earn interest will again be put into operation on June 15th when $36,638,000 will be paid to holders of the first Liberty Loan bonds. June 15th is interest duy and the Treasury Department has arranged for the exchange of inter- i est coupons lor innu ana war sav ings stamps in any posiomce wr bank. .. , "Keep the Dlars Growing,' is the slocan that is being sent out from the United States Treasury at Washington. $36,000,000 in Liberty bond interest coupons if invested in War Savings stamps will pay four per cent and is automatically com pounded. Children are being urged to, carry the Thrift messaKe from their schools to their parents. The Treasurv is asking children to draw posters illustrating the slogan -andj LflC pi till IB AJ llAVt Witoc vobvta fall. Lumberton will be happy to en- i scattered broadcast throughout the tertain the association and will have, country. The poster may be drawn, to spread itself to, put anything over on Monroe, for that town laid itself out in'right royal style for the niect- Dainted or made of cut-outs. The slogan "Keep the Dollars Growing," should appear on every poster. o ing there last week. It was a wonderfully harmonious and enthusiastic and purposeful meeting held at Monroe. There wa3 no lost motion. The meeting got down to brass tacks, adopted eminently sen sible working resolutions . and ap pointed wording committees to go after Federal and State aid for this project, to build a great hard-surface highway from the mountains to the sea, and there is now good reason upon which to build the hope that this proposed highway will be built in the near future. There are $300;-j 000,000 available out of the Federal Treasury for building, trunk-lines of roads in each State, the State put. ting up dollar for dollar of Federal aid money, rnd there is no project that has mo e merit than the WS1-mington-Cha .lotte-Ashevtyle high way. It would be well for Lumberton to appoint committees and begin to get ready without loss of time to en tertain a big delegation at the read meet that will be held here next fall. BOY SCOUT WEEK. The period beginning Sunday, June 8th, to Flag Day, June 14th, will be observed as Boy Scout week throughout the United State for the purpose of strengthening the work of the Boy Scouts of America. President Wilscn has issued a proc lamation recommending that this pe riod be observed: first, to secure sl million associate members of the na tional council; second ,tc secure a definite recognition of the effective service rendered by the Boy Scouts; third, to make a survey of the facts relating to the boyhood of each com munity in order that with the co operation of churches, schools, and other organizations definitely engag ed in woik fcr boys, adequate pro vision may be made for extending the Boy Scout program to a larger proportion of American bcyhood. The Boy Scout movement has the LUMBERTON NEEDS A LIBRARY That Lumberton needs a public library is a fact that is patent to the most superficial observatiojn. Why not have one? It would be an easy matter to start something worth while along this line if some one would take the lead and devote a little time to it. o Hawker, he who made the dare devil attempt to fly across the At lantic relying solely upon luck and his Sopwith machine, has spilled the beans. The world went wild with joy when he and Grieve, who were mourned as lest somewhere in the vast expanse of ocean, were report ed safe, and the daring airmen were admired and proclaimed as the most', daring of the daring and the luckiest' of the lucky. And then Hawker ex hibited a soreness that disgusts at the" exploit of the U. S. navy sea planes in actually flying across the Atlantic. He is not such a sport af ter all. In a speech in London the other night Hawker said it was not such a great feat, crossing the At lantic with a ship every few yards to pick you up if you should happen to fall. He could not see much mer it in an attempt to cross when prep arations had been made for one's safety. By the same token it is no trick at all to drive an auto safely from here to yonder unless you throw everything wide open and risk wrecking your machine and kill ing yourself. If you drive with some regard for Bafety you are just a chump and no sport at all, according to Hawker. It's a pity Hawker went out of his way to open his mouth. If he had kept that shut and let oth ers do the talking he woud have avoided making an 833 of himself. o State Commissioner of Publie Wei. fare. No child under sixteen can be permitted to work in any of these oc cupations after nine at night or be fore six in the morning. o The .people of this State have de termined that every boy and girl born within our borders shall have a fair chance in life to become a useful man or woman. To this end they havs prepared for n six-months school lean, with compulsory attendance, a juvenile court with a probatioi offi cer in every county, and a county board of charities and public welfare tc look tfi" social conditions r. d find remedies lor social jvH. o Af'.tr Ju'y f.:rst of this year, when tie !nw goc rito effect, every ch-id between eight and fourtesi years of age must attend school for the full term of the public school, which is to be six months hereafter. If child is unable to attend on account of poverty he may be helped from the public funds. It will be the business of the school authorities and the chief attendance officer of the county to see that the law is complied with o Racing autos at twenty-five miles an hour on the main street of Lum berton, right in the heart of the business section, may be some pecr ple's idea of a goo4 time, but it is also a mighty good way to kill some body. If it is to be allowed it would be a good idea to give some warn ing before the races start so that pedestrians and others who aro not in the game may at least have a sporting chance for their lives. o t We see by the papers where Rep resentative Godwin, contrary to first reports, voted for woman suffrage when the matter came up in the House of Congress the other day. Rah for Godwin. He has heard the distant tramp of a mighty host a sound to which many ears are deaf.! o j A piece "in memory of Reedy Bul lock," signed "Friends," was received in this office the other day. Of course it cannot be published without know ing who is responsible for it, - and there is nothing to indicate who wrote it. A small charge is made for obituary notices. We live in a day of marvelous events. The first trans-Atlantic air flight in history was completed May 27 and no doubt many people now living will live- to see flying across the Atlantic as common and safe a means of transportation as on a great ocean liner. World-wide "kultur" spread' is German aim, reads a newspaper headline. Heaven forbid that any body, shoujd be fool enough ever again to 4e "taken in" by German "kuttur." 4 Salvation Army has gone over the top in its drive fox thirteen millions of dollars. Of course. No wonder. Everybody loves the S. A. and the S. A. lass. Fruit growers in the eastern shore district of Virginia are making a fortune on stilawberries 'this seas- son, states a Richmond dispatch. Tuesday 16 cars were shipped to northern markets netting the grow ers $31,000 and Thursday 80 cars were shipped from Olny bringing in $160,000. Mr. Wiir'cr Cured of I. lig:ton.
