Case Contesting Election of County Welfare Officer This Afternoon Cases Disposed of in Criminal Court Last Week. The week's term of Superior court for the trial of criminal cases closed , Saturday afternoon. Judge O. H.j Allen of Kinston, who presided, spent' the week-end here and a weeks term, of civil court convened this morning j at 10:30 with Judge Allen presiding.' The case of Joe Buie against W. P. McAllister, contesting the validity ofi the election of Mr. McAllister as coun-; ty welfare officer, will be argued be-, fore Judge Allen this afternoon on an ! agreed statement of facts, the pointy at issue being whether or not Chair-; man J. W- Ward could legally cast a hnllnt anH then vote off a tie. The, law firms of Mclntyre, Lawrence & Proctor and McLean, Varser, McLean r Stacy represent Mr. MoAftjislter, while Mr. Buie is represented by Hon. G. B. Patterson and Mr. H. A. Mc Kinnon of Maxton. The following cases were disposed of last week after the report of the proceedings published in Thursday's Robesonian was written: Austin Walters atid Dan Shaw, charged with an affray; nol prossed as to Shaw. Walters plead guilty and judgment was suspended upon payment, of the cost,. ..Walters. Jiaying -p-ald Shaw ?300, tess"the cosir of the action. Walters was charged with shooting Shaw, the result of which! cost Shaw a leg, in a row which took place in the Globe Swamp section last! fall. j Jno. L. Locklear and W. M- Strick- land, injury to real property; prayer; for judgment continued until the next! term of court as to Locklear. Judg-1 ment suspended upon payment of his! part of the cost as to Strickland. ! Gus McQueen, larceny of an auto;; defendant plead guilty and was sen-j etnced to 12 months on the public , roads. Jno. Walker, Eugene Hamilton, Ed. Anderson and Simon Bullard, larceny and receiving stolen goods; nol pros as to Anderson; the other parties plead guilty and John Walker was sentenced to 12 months on the roads, while Eugene Hamilton was senten ced to 4 months in jail to be hired out to Mr. J. I. Townsend for the cost; and Bullard was sentenced to 4 months in jail to be hired to Mr. N. A. Townsend for the cost- Needham Chavis, assault with dead ly weapon; fined $50 and the cost. Lewis Dunn, colored, murder; sen tenced to 3 years upon the public roads. Dunn was charged with kill ing Julius Robeson, also colored, at the union station here last Septem ber. According to the evidence, Robe son died from the effects of a blow dealt him by Dunn on a Sunday night last September, a woman being at the bottom of the trouble. Dunn and the woman were arrested in Wilming ton the next day. The woman was later released by Recorder E. M. Britt when the two were given a prelimi nary haring. John Hayes, carrying concealed weapon; plead guilty; fined $50 and the cost. Sam Bryant, retailing; six months on the roads. Bert Sellers, assault with deadly weapon; defendant entered plea of nolo contendere and prayer for judg ment was continued upon payment of the cost. NOT OVER 6 CASES OP INFLUENZA IN LUMBERTON Total Number in County Around 65 Tho3 Exposed to the Disease Should Keep Away From Public Gatherings. There are not over a half-dozencas-es of influenza in Lumberton proper, according t0 Dr. E. R. Hardin, county health officer. From five to ten new cases in the county have been report ed to the county health department each day recently and the total num ber of cases so far reported in the county is around 65. Dr- Hardin is keeping close watch on the situation and says one of the best methods of holding the disease in check is for members of families where influenza has made its ap pearance. This grade will resume shows, Sunday school, church and other public meeting places. Today's Raleigh News and Observer 'states hat scattering reports avail able yesterday from sections of the State in which there has been a re currence 0f the epidemic of influenza indicate that the snread of the dis ease has reached its climax. There were materially fewer new cases re ported from nlaces where the pni. demic has been most widespread, but with some new cases of pneumonia mentioned- Story About Juror Denied. Wannamaker of the American Cotton association was undertaking to sell 300,000 bales of low-grade cotton to be shipped di rect to European spinners at 41 cents for low middling; strict good ordi nary, 39 cents; good ordinary 37 cents, and ordinary 35 cents. A number of farmers expressed themselves as pleased with the plan and more than 1,000 bales were of fered by those attending the meeting. Some were willing to put in high grade cotton at 41 cents, but this was discouraged by Mr. Gough. Options on this low-grade cotton will be closed February 10 and those these prices should secure option blanks from Mr. O. O. Dukes of Lumberton and fill them out properly by February 10. The following were elected as dele gates to the national meeting of the American Cotton association which will be held at Montgomery, Ala., Feb ruary 17 to 20: Dr G. M. SCHOOLS REOPEN TODAY. 87 Per Cent of Pupils Present This Morning After Temporary Shut Down on Account of Meningitis No New Cases. The graded and high schools re- opened this morning after being clos - ed for 6 school days, having closed down at the close of the school day Thursday, January 22nd, on account of meningitis. No new cases have been reported and 87 per cent, of the pupils were present this morning, not including the seventh grade, which was dismissed on account of the fact that the teacher is rooming in a home where influenza has made its ap pearane. This grade will resume work Wednesday. Supt. Cale advises The Robesonian that the attendance in the various grades today is: 11th none absent; 10th 1 girl absent; 9th none ab sent; 8th 3 girls absent; 6th, and other grades following, expressed in percentage of those present 87; 5th 74; 4th 70; 3rd 82; 2nd 53; 1st 49. More than 70 pupils are ab sent from the first grade. ARMENIAN RELIEF CAM PAIGN IN ROBESON l Robeson Citizens Are Asked to Con tribute $4,000 February 8 is "Near East Relief Sunday." Mr. J. C. Lentz of St. Pauls is chair man for Robeson of the Armenian Re lief campaign which began yesterday and lasts through Sunday, February 22nd. Mr. Lentz was in Lumberton Friday and arranged for a page ad-j vertisement in The Robesonian, tel'.ing of the dire need of the destitute peo ple for whom the appeal is made. Sunday, February 8, has been set apart as "Near East Relief Sunday." All ministers of the gospel are re quested to present this cause to their congregations on that day.
