The Southern Express company , yesterday recovered $200 of the $1,435 short in the accounts of T. J. Newell, former cashier at the local express office, who absconded on March 6 ana was last week arrested near Birin ingham, Ala. The $200 was turned over to Mr. W. J. Kehlenhack, spe cial investigation agent for the ex press company, by "Sharp" Ivey, who left Lumberton with Newell when he absconded. According to the story told by Ivey, he took Newell to Pembroke on his (Ivey's) auto an dthe two boarded a train there and went to Atlanta, Ga. Whi!e on the way to Atlanta Newell gave him the $200 to keep for him until hA could get enough to make h's shortage good. Newell left Ivey in Atlanta and Ivey returned to Lum Lerton. STEPHENS FOUND GUILTY. He Must Pay a Fine and Absent Himself From County for a Year. I Richard Stephens was found guil ty of manufacturing whiskey by Re corder E M. Britt today. He was fined $235 and the cost $248.40. A copper whiskey-making plant was captured near Stephens' home about 2 1-2 miles east of Lumberton three weeks ago. Stephens was not ar rested at the time, but was arrested Tuesday at oBardman, Columbus coun ty, and had been in jail here since that time. The judgment provides that if Stephens is found in Robeson county within a year from date, ca-, pias is to issue and further judg ment prayed in the case.
