There can be no Question as to what taxes were levied and collected in 1917 be cause the county commissioners' levy the taxes and the off'cial record shows just what taxes were levied. The of ficial record shows that the tax for county purposes in 1917 in Robeson was 19 cents. The same thitig is shown upon every tax receipt issued bylhe sheriff for that year. Any vot er can simply turn to, his official tax .... .1 Ml receipt lor that year ana ne wu see the itemized official tax levy printed thereon. The Chief also makes the statement that for the past nine years an -ver acre countv tax has been levied in Robeson amounting to .28.03 cents That this statement is utterly false can be seen from an examination of the official records of the county commissioners. This record shows the rate levied each every year. It is understood that Mr. Patter son is making the statement in some of his speeches that the county tax rate for 1919 n Robeson is 28 cents. He should know better and does know better. The county tax rate for 1919 is but 19 cents. See the official record. Why does the Chief continue to print such false and misleading fig ures, when the tru figures were opei. and available, to it'! Can it be for any othct han to continue 1 lie el'f jT' to deceive and mislead the people? Yet it should deceive no one. All the tax payer has to do is to turn to his tax receipt and the falsehood becomes apparent. The late Governor Russell said that certain people lied all the week and prayed it off on Sunday. C. i- . .1 . : 1 1 .eacn year unui mammy, you win ceive interest on the amount you paid for the bond. Other issues bear oth er rates of interest and other maturi ty dates, all of which are clearly stat ed on the bond. Now, if you keep your bond until the date when the Government pays ydu in full for i't, you do not need to worry if, in the meantime, the price is low one day or high the next. You and Uncl, Sam are living up to your agreement with each other, and neith er will lose by it. On the other hand, if you sell your Liberty bond now, you will find that the man you sell it to will not give you a dollar for every dollar you paid for it. The price has been brought down because so many people are of fering to sell their bonds. If the market is flooded with tomatoes, you can buy them cheap, but if everyone is clamoring for tomatoes and there are few to bA had, the price goes up. The same is true of Liberty bonds. Short-sighted people are dumping them on the market, and wise ones are buying them. The best advice that can be given to the owner of a Liberty bond is this: Hold the bond you bought dur ing the war: it is as safe 'and sound :as the United States Government it self. Buy as many more at the present low rate as you can afford. If you hold them to maturity, you are bound to make the difference between what they sell at now and their face value. You will also receive good interest on your investment. Hold on to your Liberty bonds and buy more. First National Bank. A. W. McLean Dickson McLean L. R. Varser H. E.
